This is the twelfth edition of the popular Meet the Users series, where The Beast will be interviewing a particular ArmchairGM user. The goal for the series is to allow all users to know each other better. The twelfth edition goes to False Prophet.
1. How did you learn about ArmchairGM?
So a couple years ago, I discovered wikipedia, and became an editor of sports pages there. After about a year, I got fed up with their countless policies and standards and rules, and decided to try wikinews, which is a place to post news articles.
This was equally bad, because no one who visited it gave a damn about sports. Anyways, Dan spammed politely emailed me an invitation to join ArmchairGM, a community blog for sports fans. I thought, "This seems like a good idea, No stupid rules, no pricks who don't care about sports, just fans." So I signed up over a year ago, and have been here ever since.
2. Which do you prefer: NFL or College Football.
Without a doubt in my mind, NFL. Although my favorite game was the 2006 Rose Bowl, that was an exception to the general rule NFL Football is better than College Football. NFL is superior because the quality of play is so much higher. Each and every player is in prime physical condition, and is faster than their college counterparts.
Second, College football is messed up. The BCS means if I root for a team, and they lose one game, the season's done. That's messed up. I love seasons like the 05 Steelers where they struggle to get into the playoffs, and then play some of the best football possible.
3. As a Minnesota resident, you are most likely aware that hockey is popular throughout the Land of 1,000 Lakes. Why isn't it as popular nationwide?
Hockey is a very regional sport, and because of that, if a market doesn't have a strong NHL team, they won't care. Basically, the reason Hockey's more popular in Minnesota, is the same reason why Football is so popular in the South. All the top athletes play Hockey, and the competition is intense from a young age. Here in Minnesota, there are 3rd and 4th graders that play Hockey 8 months out of the year. It's pretty intense.
Back to my original point, it's regional. Who's going to care about a sport that doesn't come natural to them? If you're not from a northern state, and ice on the lakes is uncommon, then it's not going to be as attractive as a different sport. In Minnesota, It's cold enough to create ice outside from about now till March. That means that it's easy to play for most of the year.
Finally, although not so much related to why it is more popular in Minnesota, it's an expensive sport. The equipment is extremely expensive, and you have to continue to buy sticks all the time. So it limits people's access to playing it.
4. As your profile idicates, you are a Twins fan. The Twins are known as a small market team that also has a small payroll. Other teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets, have enormous payrolls. Is this unfair? Should baseball add a salary cap?
Unfair? Eh. It's their money. They have the right to spend it how they want. But, there should at least be a soft cap in baseball so that this off season for the Twins where they lose Hunter, and possible Santana does not become the norm for smaller markets. It's bad for baseball to let teams be destroyed for having a smaller budget. That's not right.
5. If Dan allowed you to create a new feature for AGM, what would it be?
I've talked to Dan about this one, and while it's something for waaay down the road, I would like to see the homepage look like MVN or ESPN where there's a couple of featured stories at a time that have the giant picture, and a summary of the story. That'd be really awesome.
I think they have something they're working on that i'm clueless about, because Pean has been making his test edits and comments, meaning something's being developed
