For now on, Washington State Junior Guard Taylor Rochestie will be known on this blog as the anti-Kobe, as he will become one of the few starters for a major conference school who is a walk-on rather than a scholarship athlete. Actually, he previously had a scholarship, but voluntarily gave it up so that the Cougars could sign guard Marcus Capers for the 2008 recruiting class. Capers is from the state of Florida and was only a two or three star prospect. His rank, however, had no impact on Rochestie's decision.
In a statement, Rochestie said, "I am thankful that I was fortunate enough to be in a situation where I could help the team out. At the end of the year you ask yourself what you could have done, gone a little harder in practice, hit a key shot, but this was something at the beginning of the year that's outside of playing that I could do. This is the least and the most I could do at the same time. "
Since Rochestie is from Santa Barbara, California, his parents will be forced to pay out-of-state tuition that costs about $25,000. Whether they are able to afford it or not, it doesn't change the fact that this was a classy thing by the Rochestie family.
