McGwire avoids Mitchell

8
Vote

According to a New York Daily News report published today, former St. Louis Cardinals star and possible future Hall of Famer Mark McGwire is refusing to cooperate with former U.S. Senator George Mitchell's investigation into steroids in baseball.

This is reminiscent of McGwire's March 2005 testimony before Congress, when he told the assembled elected officials that he would not talk about the past, but would work to discourage young athletes from taking steroids.

Since then, the only involvement McGwire has taken in the anti-steroids fight has been monetary, with a donation to the Taylor Hooten Foundation.

Big Mac knows he is guilty. He just doesn't want to admit what he and the rest of the world knows. . . .

Unfortunately, he may be the only one who ever knows for sure. The longer his denial goes on, the worse it will make him look. Pete Rose knows that first-hand.

Mark, we want to forgive you; as soon as you want to admit your a big pussy for taking steroids and explain WHY, we'll be willing to try to want to understand. The longer you go mum, the more you look like Pete Rose

as for former Senator Mitchell... dogs and ponies will get you far in congress among the taxpayers' drones, but in the eye of baseball... just hand it over to Dowd and get the hell out of the way... what is taking so long? This is NOT a new story!

Really? You mean you knew McGwire was avoiding the investigation? You knew that already, so it's not a new story? Given that this was just reported by the News the other day, I'm going to go with it being a new story. Investigations take a long time, Manny. If you think Mitchell would obfuscate this, you know nothing about the man. He'll do as thorough an investigation as he can, given the constraints MLB has put on him. I trust him to do a good job; I don't trust the Commissioner to support him or listen to him.

Why should McGwire do anything to hurt himself legally?

That's my take too. He's not a current player. Mitchell's investigation is more witch hunt than anything else. Even if he's clean, was clean, and tells the truth, there's going to be some sort of publicly available record that can be used against him. Things can be taken out of context; slight inconsistencies can be used to hammer at his credibility; any lie (even the most innocent one) can be used to show that he's simply covering his behind.

Plus, Mitchell's investigation isn't trying to get at the truth -- it's trying to find dopers. (If he returns with a report saying "maybe 20 players have used steroids or other PEDs", Selig will be ridiculed.)

I'd not talk to him either.

Now I wonder how much grief McGwire will receive as opposed to what Bonds got.
