McGwire Scammed

Keeping Mark McGwire out of the Baseball Hall of Fame is wrong, because steroid use enhances strength, not hand and eye coordination. Steroids won't make just anybody a home run hitter. McGwire hit forty plus home runs per year throughout most of his career. This took hand and eye coordination. Bud Selig did know players were on steroids. McGwire was caught with andro during his record breaking season. He defended its usage, saying it was legal, under doctor's care and there were no rules against it. And nothing was done while he was a player. Only after he retired and with what Jose Canseco had said about steroid usage in MLB, was McGwire kept out of the baseball hall of fame. Accusations and sloppy testimony has never made anybody guilty of anything. They don’t test for HGH even now, Bud Selig wants you to believe it was just McGwire and he had an unfair advantage. Bud Selig didn’t say anything because he had just shut down MLB with a greedy owner's strike. Fans were staying away until Mark McGwire’s power brought them back. He was the most powerful and feared hitter in history. That is why Bud Selig let it happen. More greed! Mark McGwire should have gone in on the 1st ballot. Barry Bonds has been plagued with accusations and sloppy testimony throughout his career, yet he has never been found guilty of anything either. If keeping Mark McGwire out of the baseball hall of fame is right, Then Barry Bonds must not go in either.

Couple of problems:

1) You're right, it does increase strength, but thats not the issue of contention...it increases longevity, meaning someone who may struggle to feel good throughout the entire season may feel normal throughout because of steroids

2) McGwire's numbers only make him a borderline HoFer...if you're contention is a shoe in, like Bonds (numberwise, bonds is a gimme), then i understand (maybe), but McGwire's numbers aren't nearly as good...

ok, i am no expert in this...

I understand that some players went to other nations to acquire drugs (namely the DR and Mexico, based on what i've heard in the media). However, taking those drugs back to the US is definitely illegal and I'd imagine "consuming" them is as well.

Moreover, weren't numerous WWF wrestlers and Vince McMahon involved in a steroids scandal in the early 90s...those drugs were illegal...how do they differ from the ones baseball players taken...namely in legality?

McGwire was a career .263 hitter, and hit over .300 just once in a season where he played 125+ games and never won a MVP. As much as I dislike Bonds, he is a .298 career hitter, has ten .300 seasons, was more durable then McGwire, and has 7 MVP awards to his credit.

The rational for steroids...saying that it doesn't help you hit, doesn't make it right...

I've heard the "everyone was doing it" suggestion and while i disagree, it at least makes more sense to me.

Plus McGwire's numbers, when compared to similar players and HoFers is favorable...

“Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire are accused of having done“. In this space age society, all we can do, is to let sports writers vote on who and who should not be in the HALL. Do they even know right from wrong? They’re laying waste to a mans career over, “Accusations and sloppy testimony”, where’s the JUSTICE.

McGwire's 9th all-time in slugging percentage and 11th in OPS. He was the best player in his league in 1998 and probably in 96 as well; he never won an MVP because 1)he played on bad teams those years, and 2)most voters were still looking primarily at BA back then, and his obviously wasn't very high. Offensively, he was one of the two or three best players of his era. If you want to say that he shouldn't be in the Hall because of steroids, I don't agree with you, but I can at least respect that. His numbers say he's a clear HOFer, though.

Elger1950

HALL OF SHAME Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa held the entire nation spellbound the summer of 98, with “THE RACE TO 61” they were the “ALL AMERICAN BOYS”, they could do nothing wrong. Then came Jose Canseco story about steroid usage in MLB. Now they aren’t fit to wear the shoes of other hall of famers. It was legal, under doctors care and there were no rules against it at the time.

So what do we do now, lets just take the whole generation; “Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Alex Rodriguez, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Gary Sheffield” and banish them and their records from the annals of baseball. That will solve the whole mess.

Elger1950 Well lets reward “the RAT Jose Canseco” and burn everyone else. Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa did not rat on anyone. Then there was the fact that McGwire was retired, why involve him at all. At best it was hearsay; and McGwire’s lawyer had over coached him. All he had to do is repeat what he had been saying all along; “it was legal, under doctors care and there were no rules against it”; nothing was done while he was a player. If he was right then, what makes him so wrong now.
