McGahee to Ravens

by user Tylersalt

In a move forecast by Jamal Lewis's signing with the Cleveland Browns and reported on ESPN, the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills have agreed to a trade that sends running back Willis McGahee to Baltimore for three draft picks -- the Ravens' 3rd and 7th round picks this year, plus their 3rd round pick next year.

McGahee also signed a 7-year contract with the Ravens that could be worth over $40 million, placing him by some estimates among the top 5 most highly paid running backs in the NFL.

What do you think? McGahee is a good player and a good fit for the Ravens, but is this too much? What are his fantasy implications? Even while losing Adalius Thomas to the Pats, is Bawlmer (as they say in the local parlance) going to remain one of the best teams in the league next year?

I think the price is right, and the contract makes sense. The way I see it, it's basically a 1 year, $8m contract for 2007 (with cap implications of $2m this year, and a $6m hit next year if he's cut), and then it effectively becomes a 4 year, $20m contract, with a $5m cap hit if he's cut at the end of that part. The last two years have something close to $6m salaries with $8m cap numbers, so he's almost certain to never see those paychecks. It makes sense for the Ravens because they're getting a virtual bargain for 2007, with the cap implications being almost nothing and the draft picks combined being the equivalent of a late second. If Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Steve McNair, Derrick Mason, etc. all start to (really) show their age, and the Ravens don't like McGahee, they can blow the whole ship up in one felt swoop still.

They aren't going to be as good. Both Pittsburg and Cincy are Better than them. The Steelers were a Big Ben motorcycle accident away from an attempt to defend their title, and I'm not convinced they would be easily stopped. It's a good move, but I don't think its enough to keep them in the mix

Just fill the whole team with players from Da U and sit back and wait until there's an onfield brawl with the Bengals or somebody
