Announced earlier today from the NFL Commissioner office, Adam Pacman Jones will be suspended for the entire 2007 season. In addition, Bengals Wideout Chris Henry will be suspended for the first 8 games of the 2007 season. Both of these suspensions are a result of their multiple off the field encounters over the last twelve months.
Today’s decision will go down as a watershed moment for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Today is the day he put his foot down and made the statement to anyone who would listen, that the NFL would not condone poor behavior from its players, and they will be held to a standard. It shows that playing for the NFL is a privilege and players will not be allowed to drag the name of the league and hundreds of working professionals through the mud because they are unable to control themselves in a normal manner. By sending down such harsh ruling, Goodell has set a precedent that all other NFL players will be able to look to, and hopefully think twice before they find themselves in a bad situation, or doing something stupid.
I know all leagues have their problems, and all leagues have issues, and there are social reasons for why people behave a certain way, and you can blame this that and your dog if you want. However, the bottom line is people need to be held accountable for their actions. USA Today printed an article today showing the picture of 50 NFL players who have been arrested since 2006. That is unacceptable. The only way that these players are going to get it through their skulls that they are not God’s gift to the world is to hit them where it matters. Take away their privileges don’t allow them to play football. Those multimillion dollar contracts are as impressive when you cannot reach your incentive goals, or work during the week to go to the pay window on Monday.
I applaud Roger Goodell for showing that he is not a push over commissioner and he will not allow his league be overrun by poor behavior.
