• H.P. Whitney's Regret became the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby.

• The Athletics who had recently moved to Oakland, gave their new fans by the bay their first thrilling moment as Catfish Hunter pitches the first regular season perfect game in the major leagues in 46 years, shutting down the Minnesota Twins 4-0, while striking out 11, including Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew three times. The historic game was witnessed by 6,928 fans.

• Arsenal secure their first ever "Double" by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Arsenal's Charlie George scored the winner in extra time.

• The Soviet Union announced that they would not participate in the 1984 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles.

• Mark Messier of the New York Rangers became the third player to reach 100 NHL playoff goals.

• At Fenway Park, Pokey Reese has the first two-homer game of his career in the Boston Red Sox' 9-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Curt Schilling pitches his first AL complete game, and the 80th of his career, while striking out eight. Reese hits an inside-the-park home run and one of the conventional type over the Green Monster, to snap a 172 at-bat homerless streak dating to April 4, 2003. The last Red Sox player to hit a conventional homer and an inside-the-park homer in the same game was Tony Armas on September 24, 1983, at Tiger Stadium.
