  • Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox threw the third perfect game of the major leagues. It was against the Philadelphia Athletics. It was the first perfect game under modern rules.

  • Jim Bailey became the first runner to break the four-minute mile in the U.S.

  • With 512, Willie Mays broke the National League record for home runs.

  • Pete Rose gets his 3,000 career hit off of Montreal pitcher Steve Rogers, becoming the youngest player ever to do so. Rose's Reds lost the game 3-4.

  • The Orlando Magic beat the Boston Celtics. in the last game played at the historic Boston Gardens.

[edit] 2004

  • The idea that "Spider-Man 2" ads would appear on bases in major league games during games from June 11-13 was announced. The plan was canceled the next day.
