- Chicago Cubs's shortstop, Jimmy Conney, completes an unassisted triple play after snagging a hard hit line drive off the bat of Paul Waner. He is the sixth person to record an unassisted triple play.
- Johnny Neun of the Detroit Tigers) becomes the seventh player to record an unassisted triple play.

- The Chicago White Sox lose both games of a double header and accuse the umpire George Moriarty, a former White Sox player, of purposely blowing calls. The umpire challenges the team to a fight and knocks down pitcher, Mike Gaston before the manager, Lew Fonseca and catchers, Charlie Berry and Frank Grubeeven, gang up on him and pummel him to the ground.

- Bob Sweikert won the Indianapolis 500.

- Mickey Mantle hits a monsterous shot that just barely misses hitting the baseball out of Yankee Stadium. The upper deck homer would've been the first ball to ever completely clear the stadium.

- Sadaharu Oh becomes the first player to hit 600 home runs in Japan.

- Dennis Eckersly tosses a no-hitter to help the Cleveland Indians beat the California Angels, 1-0

- Bobby Rahal became the first driver to average over 170mph in the Indianapolis 500.

- Eric Davis becomes the first National League player to hit 3 grand slams in a month

- Scott Sanderon and the New York Yankees beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-1. With the win Sanderson becaome the 9th player to defeat all 26 major league teams.

- A ceremony is held to induce Dan Quisenberry into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame
- Mark McGwire hit his 27th home run for the year breaking the record for the most home runs in a year before the month of June set by Ken Griffey Jr. the year before with 24.
- Barry Bonds hit his 522nd career home run passing Willie McCovey and Ted Williams to move into 11th place on the all-time list. The homer was also his 17th in the month of May, the most in a month.

- The Atlanta Braves homer 4 times against their former pitcher, Tom Glavine giving them 55 for the month. The 55 ties a record with the 1947 New York Giants and the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals.

- During the Indianapolis 500, Bill Vukovich hit the 3-car pileup of Al Keller, Johnny Boyd, and Rodger Ward and was killed when his car became airborne and went out of the course, landing upside down and on fire.
