  • The first Preakness Stakes was won by Survivor.

  • In the first five innings alone, Norm Zauchin hits 3 home runs and a double to drive in 10 runs for the Boston Red Sox as the Sox roll over the Washington Senators, 16-0.

  • Clint Courtney becomes the first catcher to use an oversized catcher's mitt to catch a knuckle ball pitcher as he catches for Hoyt Wilhelm

  • Major League Baseball announces two nex expansion teams, the San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos. The Expos would become the first MLB team to make their home outside of the United States
  • George Halas retires after 48 years as coach of the Chicago Bears.

  • The Philadelphia Flyers win their second straight Stanley Cup by beating the Buffalo Sabres 4 games to 2.

  • Three New Jersey businessmen, led by John McMullen, bought the NHL's Colorado Rockies. They got approval to move the team to New Jersey and rename the team the New Jersey Devils.

  • Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees became the third pitcher to make 700 starts.

  • The St. Louis Cardinals honor Dizzy Dean by unveiling a monument in his honor outside of Busch Stadium
  • The Cincinnati Reds retire the number 24 in honor of Tony Perez

  • Driving home from Boston to his Massachusetts home after a start, Boston Red Sox hurler, Curt Schilling calls the cops to report a drunken driver.

  • Curt Schilling allowed 4 runs in 7 innings against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, but got the win as the Boston Red Sox beat Tampa Bay, 6-4. It was Schilling's 200th career win.

  • The Detroit Red Wings defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime to win the NHL Western Conference Finals. It is the second consecutive year that the Red Wings will compete in the Stanley Cup Finals.
  • In Rome's Stadio Olimpico, F.C. Barcelona defeat Manchester United 2-0 to win the UEFA Champions League Final. The Bracelona goals were from Samuel Eto'o on 10 minutes and Lionel Messi on 70 minutes.
