  • Tris Speaker got his 3000th hit off Washington Senator' pitcher Tom Zachary.

  • Princeton beat Columbian, 2-1, in the first ever televised baseball game.

  • For the fourth consecutive day, every game on the American League schedule is rained out.

  • Don Nottebart throws a no-hitter for the Houston Colt 45's against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the second year in existance for the Houston franchise and it was their first no-hitter.

  • The Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to move from the NFC to the AFC.

  • With an infield single off of Wayne Simpson, Hank Aaron got his 3000th hit, becoming just the 9th major league player to do so.

  • Tim McCraw hits a 200-ft home run. The ball wasn't much more than a blooper over second base, but three Cleveland Indians players collided when going after it. By the time anyone was able to get to the ball, McCraw was crossing home.

  • Joe Ferguson hit the 6000th home run in Los Angeles Dodgers history.

  • The Philadelpha Phillies and the Chicago Cubs combined for 45 runs, 50 hits, 15 walks, and 11 home runs as the Phillies beat the Cubs in 10 by a score of 23-22. Mike Schmidt hit 2 home runs, Larry Bowa had 5 hits, and Bill Buckner had 3 home runs and 7 RBI. Seven different pitchers in the game allowed at least 4 runs.

  • Bobby Valentine becomes the manager of the Texas Rangers after Doug Rader is fired.

  • Eric Floyd of the Golden State Warriors set a playoff record with 29 points in one quarter.

  • Gary Carter, playing for the Montreal Expos caught his 2000th game becoming the third catcher in major league history to do so
  • 1,000,000 fans go through the turnstiles at the Skydome after just 21 games. The Toronto Blue Jays become the quickest franchise to reach the attendance mark.

  • Mike Blowers hits a grand slam in his second consecutive game becoming just the 13th major league player to do so.

  • David Wells becomes the 13th player in major league history to throw a perfect game. He struck out 11 as the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins, 4-0.

  • Ricky Henderson signs a contract with the Seattle Mariners after being released by the New York Mets

  • Ervin Santana makes his MLB debut for the Los Angeles Angels. The first four Cleveland Indians batters he faces hit for the cycle as Grady Sizemore tripled, Coco Crisp doubled, Travis Hafner singled, and Ben Broussard homered. Santana would last 4 innings and take the loss by allowing 6 runs as the Indians go on to win, 13-5
