• Pete Schneider, playing right field for Vernon in the Pacific Coast League, went 6-7 with 5 home runs, a double hit off the top of the wall, and 14 RBI. The only time he was retired was on a hard hit line drive to center field. Vernon went on to win the game 35-11.

• Hod Eller throws a no-hitter as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0.

• The Boston Braves play their first night game at Braves Field and beat the New York Giants by a score of 5-1.

• The Chicago White Sox score at least 1 run in every inning during a 12-8 win over the Boston Red Sox. Only five teams in AL history have scored a run in every inning of a 9 inning game.

• The Brooklyn Dodgers had their 11 game winning streak snapped as the Chicago Cubs beat them 10-8. In the game Ernie Banks would hit his first of five grand slams for the year.

• Sandy Koufax tosses a no-hitter to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 8-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants

• The San Francisco Giants trade Willie Mays to the New York Mets in exchange for Charlie Williams and cash. Mays would go on to play 135 games over the next year and a half for the Mets, but at the age of 41 he was a shell of his former self.

• Albert Belle is fined for one week for throwing a baseball at a fan. The fan was heckling him about his problems with alcohol and calling him Joey.

• Al Leiter became the first pitcher in Florida Marlins history to throw a no hitter.

• Kerry Wood sets the record for most K's in consecutive games with 33. The Chicago Cubs rookie struck out 20 in a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on May 6 and then came back to strike out 13 in a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. He would finish the year with 233 K's in 166.2 IP on his way to winning the NL Rookie of the Year.

• Bobby M. Jones of the Colorado Rockies took on Bobby J. Jones of the New York Mets. Jones got the win and Jones got the loss as the Rockies went on it win it 8-5.

• Five different Cleveland Indians have at least 3 hits as the Tribe snap the five game winning streak of the Kansas City Royals by a score of 16-0. It's Cleveland's most lopsided shut out in 45 years. Manny Ramirez had 2 HR and 6 RBI. Jaret Wright and Steve Reed combined for the 5-hit shutout.

• The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 14-8 in a game that would take 4:22 to play. The time ties the record for the longest non-extra inning game ever played.

• Rick Ankiel, then a promising pitching prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, is sent down to AAA after throwing 5 wild pitches in his last outing. In 2001 he would walk 25 batters in 24 IP.

• Rafael Palmeiro, then playing for the Texas Rangers hit the 500th home run of his career in a 17-10 win over the Cleveland Indians. Dave Elder surrendered the blast.

• Manny Ramirez is 0-3 in his first game as an American citizen. Manny ran to the outfield waving a small American flag after the Dominican Republic native passed his citizenship test the day before.

• Hideki Matsui's streak of consecutive games played is stopped at 518. The New York Yankees leftfielder broke his wrist while diving for a ball hit by Mark Loretta in a game that the Boston Red Sox would go on to win 5-3.

• In his first game off the DL, Ken Griffey Jr. hits a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 11th to give the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. The Reds were losing 4-1 after the Nationals scored 3 in the top of the 11, but scored 4 in the bottom of the inning to win it.
