Born on August 18, 1915 in Denton, North Carolina, Max Lanier (Hubert Max Lanier) played for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and St. Louis Browns over the course of his 14 year career. Lanier broke into the bigs on April 20, 1938 with the St. Louis Cardinals, and put up a 3.34 ERA in 105 innings pitched in 1940, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Max Lanier's best season was 1943, when he posted a 1.90 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 123 batters.
