On Wednesday Night at American Airlines Center, the Dallas Mavericks fell to the Phoenix Suns 129-127 in double overtime. With the loss, the Suns gained ground on the Mavs, who are only 2.5 games behind Dallas for the top spot in the Western Conference.
In this game, Phoenix went on a great start, leading the Mavs by 14 points at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Dallas started to chip away at the Suns lead, trimming the Suns lead by 7 at halftime.
In the second half, the Mavs started strong, outscoring the Suns by 22 in the third quarter and at one point leading by 16 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Suns came back to tie the game and send it to Overtime. After an equal first OT, Phoenix finally fully away and won the game in double overtime, ending a long and emotionally exhausting for all in attendance at the AAC.
For the Suns, it was confirmation that their team is a contender for the NBA title.
For the Mavs, it was confirmation that they are a team that will need to do more in order to win a title in 2007.
Notes:
Nash Outshines Nowitzki in MVP Race in Wednesday's Game:
-Steve Nash made a major move on the MVP trophy, hitting big shots and leading his team to victory on Wednesday Night in Dallas. With the Suns down by three points and with the last shot in regulation, Nash had two chances to tie the game and hit on his last shot. Also, Nash scored 10 points in the last 2 minutes of regulation, helping the Suns make their comeback and tie the game, sending the contest to Overtime.
-Dirk Nowitzki will be remembered for missing critical free throws in the final 30 seconds of regulation. The 91% free throw shooter missed two of four free throws in the final seconds of the 4th quarter, allowing the Suns to comeback and win the game.
The sad thing is Dirk is having an outstanding year, but will be overshadowed as he failed to perform in crunch time against his good friend, Steve Nash.
Stack wasn't whack......
-Jerry Stackhouse led the Mavericks with 33 points, the most points in a game during his three years as a Dallas Maverick.
Amare's Back and He's Pretty Good....
-One of the ongoing stories for the Suns is how Amare Stoudemire will recover from a season marred by injuries and unrealistic expectations. In Wednesday Night's game at Dallas, Stoudemire scored 41 points on near perfect shooting, going 16-19 from the floor.
This note should scare everyone in the NBA, because as Stoudemire's recovery goes, so do the chances for the Suns to win the West in June.....
