Mattingly Wants To Manage The Yankees!

by Kenrick Thomas

Managing the New York Yankees is something Don Mattingly has the advantage over many. Having the experience, and learning from Joe Torre is helpful.

"I've heard that experience thing come up a lot," Mattingly said, "but in my own mind I've been managing for the last four years, and to be honest with you, as a player you're playing along the whole time."

Experience is important, because it helps the Yankees. Mattingly knows the players, and New York. He's been around the Yankees, and played with them.

Mattingly should be interested, it brings less work towards the front office.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity for whoever gets it, and if it's me I'm looking forward to that challenge," said Mattingly.

It's always a challenge, because New York brings pressure. It's not new, because Mattingly's been through it.

Mattingly's the favorite, because of his knowledge with the Yankees. It's important, because knowing how everything works is easier.

"There's a lot of Joe Torre in me but there's also a lot of Billy Martin and Lou Piniella and whatever creates the personality inside of me that says we need to get this job done," said Mattingly.

He knew he'll become the Yankees manager, because that's Mattingly's dream. Torre's failure's were coming, and Mattingly was prepared.

The players shouldn't have complaints, because Mattingly took knowledge from Torre. Torre's love will never end.

"In my eyes, Joe Torre is more than a Hall of Fame manager," Jeter said. "He is a friend for life, and the relationship we have shared has helped shape me in ways that transcend the game of baseball. "His class, dignity, and the way he respected those around him -- from ballplayers to batboys -- are all qualities that are easy to admire, but difficult to duplicate."

He'll be loved, but its time for another manager. Torre couldn't find success, and he broke down.

"Every year, it was disappointment, disappointment, disappointment," Torre said. "I just didn't think that was the right thing. And I just let them know how I felt. But when I was speaking, it was, there was nothing coming back."

Mattingly and the Yankees want to win, and that's the bottom line.

"If I get the opportunity to manage this club, it's about going forward," Mattingly said. "It's about winning games and doing whatever we can to win. If we don't do that and I don't do my job and I get criticism, that's part of it."

Anyone who would actually want the job of dealing with the New York media, George Steinbrenner and a roster full of high priced prima donnas is a masochist.
