Matt Murton (Matthew Henry Murton) was born on October 3, 1981 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He made his Major League debut on July 8, 2005 for the Chicago Cubs. In 2005, his rookie year, he hit .321 with 7 home runs and 14 RBI. Murton played for the Chicago Cubs for his entire 2 year career.

Matt was acquired by the Chicago Cubs from Boston as part of a four-team trade at the 2004 trading deadline -- he and Nomar Garciaparra were traded to Chicago in exchange for Doug Mientkiewicz, Alex Gonzalez, Brendan Harris and pitcher Francis Beltran.

Following the 2005 season, Matt was ranked the 12th best prospect in the Southern League by Baseball America.

Matt was named the best hitter for average and having the best strike zone in the Cubs organization by Baseball America after the 2004 season.

Matt attended Georgia Tech university, and earned Freshman All-American honors from Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball in 2001.
