Matsui Out Indefinitely

10
Vote

Hideki Matsui, outfielder for the New York Yankees, fractured his wrist on Thursday night diving for a ball against the Red Sox. He will have surgery on Friday, and be out anywhere from 3 months to the rest of the season.

After looking at Matsui's swollen wrist, New York center fielder Johnny Damon said it's possible Matsui might not play again until next season. Is it possible the Yankees paid extra to get Damon because of his medical skills?

The play happenend on a bloop hit from Boston's Mark Loretta in the top of the 1st inning at Yankee Stadium. Since Matsui did not play a full half-inning on defense or have an at-bat, his consecutive games streak also ended at 518.

Matsui has 5 HR 19 RBI .353 OB .261 AVG in 36 games played.

Too bad, he really is one of my favorite Yankees. One less person on that team I don't hate without him.

What do Javy Lopez, AJ Burnett, Derek Lee, and Hideki Matsui have in common? They're all on the DL and on my fantasy baseball team in the only league I'm playing in this year with money on the line. Unbelievable..... I hadn't heard that he was out for the year though. It's a possibility, but I think they're still hoping that he'll come back this season.

When they showed it in slo-mo on replay, that ranked right up there with Theisman, McCaffrey, the pitcher dislocating his shoulder video, and Willis McGahee vs. Ohio State on the "I'm gonna be sick" scale...

sucks for the Yankees. Matsui is a solid player. He works hard, keeps his head down, and produces. What's not to like?

Rumored replacements already: Bobby Abreu, Shannon Stewart, and Torii Hunter. Personally I'd try and get Abreu and his combination of speed and power.

Seeing this on SportsCenter this morning made me cringe. It's a shame when anybody gets hurt like that.

Well...yeah...I think Abreu would be a no-brainer. He's heads and shoulders above Hunter and Stewart isn't even all that much better than Bubba Crosby. But there's almost no way the Yankees are getting him. The Phillies are going to be in contention this year and the Yankees have nothing to give up. The Twins will probably be looking to dump Hunter, so maybe the Yankees can scrape something decent out of their farm system.

That's the problem in New York... they're locked into long-term deals overpaying too many people, all while already having mortgaged everything they have in AAA Columbus. They have no one to trade with because no one wants crap prospects or over-valued and overpayed stars.

You say that like that system isn't working for them...They've won the East how many times in a row now doing that?

That was a sick replay. After the wrist broke, and he picked up his arm, you could just see the wrist flail...disgusting.

The six year draught says it's not working, Corey. If the Yankees are going to get better again, George needs to just foot the bill and keep his nose out of player deals. That's how they put together the teams in the mid to late 90's when George wasn't allowed to be involved in day-to-day operations.

They also had one of the best pitching rotations around during those back-to-back-to-back World Series teams. If you really think it's the system that's failing, you should really look at who they're picking up with that system. This is a team right now that could score 15 runs on any given day but still lose.

There's a reason they had the best pitching staff in all of baseball. Everyone not named Steinbrenner got together and made shrewd, well-calculated deals to get guys who hadn't already peaked. Now they have Pavano, Johnson, Brown, etc... because George had a whim or two. Don't get me wrong, as a Sox fan I love seeing it happen, but the solution seems clear, from the outside anyway.

The system isn't working. You can get a really good team for $100 million. For $200 million the Yankees should have a great team with no flaws and no weaknesses. But they have no depth and very few arms that they can rely on. If the team was built correctly they would have better players than Melky Cabrera and Bubba Crosby to come in off the bench to fill in for Sheffield and Matsui. There's a chance they can put together something to get Bobby Abreu, but it's not very likely at all. They have nothing left to give. They win the division title every year, but they get less bang for their buck than any other team in baseball.

At least they're winning division titles, getting in the playoffs, SNIFFING the World Series. You want to call that failing then fine, maybe you guys have different levels of failure than me, but I'm sure the Devil Rays, Royals and Pirates would love to win a division title once in the 21st Century. Regardless of that though, you're right, they have horrible depth, but it's going to be hard to reverse that trend. Look at what the Marlins have done after both of their World Series championships. That could be the Yankees if they ever decided to gain depth and a respectable farm system.

Steak nailed it on the head. They rival the New York Rangers in the "Get the least for your dollar" department. And if you ask any Yankee fan, believe me, winning the division and getting into the playoffs isn't enough. A bit spoiled? Yeah. But not a bad thing to try and live up to year in and year out either.

Of course Yankees fans - and Red Sox fans, by the way - have different standards of success than small-market teams. While in Tampa, Milwaukee, Kansas City, or Pittsburgh winning a division title (or even the wildcard) might make for a banner year, it's not all that impressive when you have the highest (or second highest) payroll in baseball. IT's expected. What is impressive? Winning the World Series.
