College

Before switching to fullback once he turned pro, Mathieu played quarterback at Laval University. In 2003, Bertrand dominated on the field completing 141 of 218 passes for 2,395 yards with 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions. His outstanding play earned Mathieu his second straight Quebec conference MVP award and a Hec Crighton Trophy nomination as Canadian university football's Outstanding Player. After a being drafted in the fifth round by the Montreal Alouettes in 2003, Bertrand was later released and returned to university football that fall.

Pro

2004

Bertrand made his pro debut in Week 1 of the 2004 season against Montreal. He has seen action as a fullback and on special teams. He was the Eskimo nominee for Rookie of the Year.

2005

punishing fullback and special teams player, Mathieu proved a valuable commodity in 2005 racking up 32 yards on 13 carries, added 169 yards on 21 receptions and contributed 16 special teams stops. Bertrand scored his first career touchdown vs. Hamilton in Week 6. CFL West Division Semifinal: one carry for a one-yard touchdown and three receptions for 26 yards. CFL West Division Championship: two rushes for four yards, three catches for 18 yards and one fumble recovery. Did not play in 2005 Grey Cup due to injury.

2006

Bertrand played in 14 games (10 starts) and had 15 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. Mathieu continued to be a force on special teams and recorded 12 special teams tackles.

2007

Bertrand was named Edmonton's top special teams player in 2007. Led the CFL with 20 special teams tackles before suffering a season ending injury Sept. 28 vs. Toronto. Played in 13 games (11 starts) this season.
