Marvin Lewis, meet futility

by Suckatsports

When Marvin Lewis took over the Bengals, they were considered one of the worst franchises in all of sports. Starting from the very top, the management was not committed to winning, and made it known to the city and its fans. Their highly ranked draft choices piled up from years of inadequate coaching, handcuffed in part by the frugal nature of the Brown family. This was one of the only teams in the league that also lacked a scouting department.

In came, Marvin Lewis, of defensive genius fame, and sporting a newly shined Superbowl ring from his time in Baltimore.

The results were slow, but when Cincinnati beat then unbeaten Kansas City in "The Jungle" everyone knew they had arrived. Big armed, and no longer Heisman-trophy-cursed quarterback at the helm, the studious talent, lead by example on and off the field. A team that by everyone's account should have been led by its defense was now lighting things up with explosive and talented players on offense. They hit 8-8, and the next year won the division and flew into the playoffs. Things were looking up.

But since the time Kimo von Oelhoffen tore Carson's knee to shreds, the avalanche of success has come crashing down. Two years in a row, now, great things were expected from this team, be it winning the division, or in other ways qualifying for the playoffs, this team was to be reckoned with. But ever since that day, mediocrity is the word. As in the last calendar year, the highly touted Bengals are a mere 6-11.

At the fear of falling into last place in an already bad division, the Bengals had high expectations for the Monday night meeting with the best team in the league. Those high expectations turned sour when they were completely humiliated on national television.

Chad Johnson screaming like a little girl on the sidelines. Defense not being able to field an entire unit. Players questioning play calls. Coaches and players calling this team immature. And no more Monday off days for these guys. Is the whole thing falling apart? Marvin Lewis, meet futility.

You may indeed be a great X's and O's coach, but motivation might be lacking. The players have given up listening to you, but I think they've done the same to their parole officers as well. It's not completely your fault, it's just your situation. As a franchise, they've never been a winner, they've always stunk. Yes, they had their years of going to the Superbowl, but those days are now nearly 20 years behind, besides those handfuls, there's been nothing to be proud of as a Bengals fan.

There have been seedlings of success. Hope. But be weary of buying into this, and investing emotionally, because as history has continually shown you, it's hard to win as a Bengals fan.

I think your side comment about their parole officers is also key. This team lacks discipline, and that is usually the HC's fault.

Who's fault is it when the best player on the team is on the sideline on 4 and 1 from the goalline?

Very well said. To be honest I actually question Lewis's capability as a coach. He is a defensive guru, who has struggled to field a competitive defense over the last three years. Throw in the fact that he has no ability to keep his players interest. It is not the coaches responsibility to hand hold his players, but it is the HC's job to get his players to buy into the current system and he has not done that.

So called "defensive gurus" rarely work out in head coaching jobs. Look at Crennel too. I also heard someone call Dick Jauron and Dick LeBeau defensive geniuses lately... anyone remember the Bears and Bills from a few years ago?

Don't forget Wade Phillips. His defenses in SD and Atlanta were awesome, but in Dallas have been very undisciplined. Even though their scoring numbers are low, that thing has holes all over it. And yet, the offense is sky high.

I wouldnt throw the Wade Phillips Dallas D under the bus just yet. They didnt give up a TD last week to the Rams. And as Newman and Ellis get healthier Phillips defense will gel.

I've written about Wade before. I just don't like him as a head coach. Maybe it's too early in the season, but he always starts off with a lot to prove for me. It could be personal.

Yeah, I can tell you have a personal Vendetita against Wade and thats understandable I feel the same way about Norv Turner. The difference is Norv is destroying his team, while Wade to this point has proven to be a great fit for the Cowboys. The difference is, Wade's personality fits that of the players he has. In addition he has a good offensive coordinator who is handling that side of the ball. Think of them more as Buddy Ryan and Mike Dika

Point well taken. Did I not post what I wrote about Norv Turner? If I didn't, I should really do that, it's on my blog. I agree 100% with what you said about Turner.

I could come around to not disliking Wade, but I keep on thinking of him as Les Miles. When everything is going great - he's awesome. But when things start to turn sour, might as well have a cardboard cutout of him.

So, things are going great right now in Dallas.

Nothing wrong with that. Ill be the first to throw a coach under the bus once a team starts to sour, but for now Wade is doing well and I will back him.

Anyone else notice that Marvin Lewis has challenged the wrong thing for the past 2 weeks? The Sammy Morris fumble, and the Matt Hasselbeck catch.

More importantly anyone notice that Lewis is close to breaking? His little tirade on Monday night was too little too late.

He most definitely is. They had the Benglas radio analyst on the radio here, and he was very honest about what he's seeing in the locker room. How many times have you seen an NFL coach not give a team a day off? That's almost unheard of. He also gave them an ultimatum (from the radio analyst) that anyone who doesn't show up for that Tuesday 4 pm meeting, need not show up for the rest of the year. To be fair, though, if he isn't close to breaking, this season was over before it started. It may be too little, too late, but he's got to do something.

To be honest, I dont know if this group of guys (the Bengals) can hold up to a tightly run ship. They are a young team, and they have been brought up with little disciplne and there is a goo dchance they will struggle if Lewis comes down on them hard. Dont be suprised if Chad Johnson shows he has more in common with TO than endzone celebrations.

Heh. To be fair, I'm not even a Bengals fan, I'm just an observer. But that doesn't mean I haven't felt the same kind of pain as you, or the kind Cincinnati is feeling right now. I'm a Browns fan.

This is all due to the curse that Bo Jackson put on this team for destroying his hip back in '90.
