Martyball was Smartyball

Don’t blame this on Marty Schottenheimer, this, alas, was not his fault. Marty finally had it all put together. Marty was using Martyball the best way he knew how, with a (essentially) rookie QB and the best damn back in the NFL. Marty had everything lined up, everything in place, and once again, his hopes were dashed, but it wasn’t Marty’s fault, he wasn’t even calling the plays!

The game came down to a Nate Kaeding miss, a far kick, over 50 yards and as far angled as possible (on the hash), but certainly doable for a pro-bowl kicker. But even I can’t blame a pro-bowl kick for missing a 50 plus yarder, especially against the wind. You’ve got to put him in position to win it, and the San Diego Chargers failed.

The vaunted defense truly was a let down at the end of the game. Marlon McCree had the game in his hands and made pretty much one of the biggest mistakes a defender can make, giving up the ball. With that fumble, any momentum the New England Patriots might have lost via the Tom Brady interception was back and magnified. Now, with a fresh set of downs and a short field in front of them, the Pats marched on for 8 (you read that right) points.

Now, with less than 1 minute 10 left, Marty is forced away from Martyball (he now has the headset on, but who knows who was calling the plays) and he allows Phil Rivers to show what he’s made of. Rivers attempts to bite the field in chunks, but it was to little to late and we’re back to mocking Marty.

So what did Marty do wrong. LaDainian Tomlinson touched the ball 25 times (23 rushes, 123 yards, 2 TDs, 2 receptions 64 yards) and Phil Rivers showed some moxy, going 14/32, 230 yards and an interception. Those numbers look a little below average eh, maybe they wouldn’t if 6 passes weren’t dropped. Phil Rivers, [[Eric Parker, and Marlon McCree each had fumbles that led to points, but only McCree’s led to a touchdown (14 points total off turnovers).

Tom Brady had 3 interceptions (New England had no fumbles). San Diego did not score of any of Brady’s 3 turnovers. Tom Brady was sacked twice, neither of which had a significant impact on the game.

It’s the players on the field that made the game what is was and it’s the players who should be ultimately responsible for the outcome. San Diego Chargers failed to execute in the game (dropped passes are not a coach’s fault, they’re professionals). Marty clearly gameplanned well, taught well, explained well, everyone just didn’t play well.

To interject a little of my own opinion, the San Diego Chargers are a more talented team than the Patriots. You see where that got them. If you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best (and execute!)

So if Marty has the best back in the NFL and he uses him, and a strong solid defense and he lets them play and his QB is a rookies and his receivers clearly can’t catch, what was wrong with Martyball?

Nothing.

Chargers lost the game because of mental mistakes. This included taking stupid penalties, trying to pick up the ball on a fumbled punt instead of just covering it, and running with the ball after an INT instead of taking a knee. Most of this is on thje players, but I can't help but think that the coaches are partially responsible for not harping the mental aspect of the game to the players.

Why did L.T. have a criminally low 9 carries in the second half (and was only targeted by one pass -- the Colvin pick), despite running roughshod through the Patriots in the first half?

In the first half, why did SD go for it on 4th-and-11 from the Pats' 30 instead of going for a field goal (which proved to be the winning margin)?

Why did Marty waste a challenge/timeout on the McCree interception-fumble play, when it was obvious that the call on the field would be upheld?

Why did San Diego waste so much time on their final drive (4-yard passes to Gates, etc.)?

Where does the buck stop for Schottenheimer? If not Marty, then who do you blame for the Chargers' collection of coaching miscues?

9 is not criminally low. LT at 23 carries for the game, a pretty decent workload. that equals about 12 per half average and he got 9...I think you're embelishing a bit.

the explaination I get for going for it on 4th and 11 is that they didn't have confidence in Kaeding, but at the end of the game, they had no choice.

You got me on the McCree call

The final drive was basically River's fault, you gotta pass toward the sidelines...

There wasn't so many coaching miscues as stupid player mistakes. See Christofs.

I agree, Marty didn't coach his best game, but he coached a damn good one and his players lost it...

Why is this challenge being blamed on Marty? He only knows what his guys in the booth tell him. There is no way he can see a play like that from the sideline and throw out a challenge flag. His assistants after seeing a replay told him he could challenge, and he did. The Chargers coach that watches the replays for challenges needs blamed, not Marty

I agree, but here's the answer to that Tartan: He's Marty's assistant (Marty wanted him...)

Yes, Marty did make the personel decision to put him in that role. For that deserves some secondary blame, but certainly not what he is receiving. Yes it was obvious to everyone at home after seeing 15 replays from all angles in super slow motion, but Marty nor the assistant had that luxury, the decision needed to be made, and this was a game changing play, so he challenged it. I can't fault him for that

get rid of the instant replay. it is a joke used by losers. the nfl has become a second rate sport with these pro athletes reduced to clowns. they celebrate a single tackle, a first down, a five yard run, a pass reception. they celebrate everything and look like a bunch of idiots out there. the nfl with their salary cap/revenue sharing model have turned this sport into some sort of sick joke. you don't know from week to week who are the top teams. where are teh dynasties? you have teams with 8 wins going to the playoffs. who cares about this one stupid call? the whole game has become a joke. let us hope and pray this doesn't happen to our beloved national pastime.

pretty soon nfl players will be taking a crap in the end zone after a touchdown and then wiping their ass on the goal posts.....and the funny thing is that the refs won't even throw a flag. let's face it boys, the nfl has become a joke plain and simple. it is a freak show and players from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's would hate to play today's football. except for the money of course. haha. other than that it has definitely gotten worse. i can't even watch more than a few games all year. the other day i saw some clown celebrating a tackle he just made when his team was down by 14!!!! what a clueless idiot!!! i mean if i were the coach i friggin smack the crap out of him and then bench him. i mean these players spend more time dancing then playing the stupid game.

Compared to 70s and 80s, today's football completely sucks. They used to play football, now they play Madden with live players... and the salary cap totally screwed the franchises. Thank GOD the Cardinals are the on true constant in the NFL.

it got popular, which brought money. Then they figured how to give every team a chance (communism... I mean, salary cap). With popularity and money in every town comes a watered down product. Long Live Conrad Dobbler (who wouldn't last a minute in today's game because he would actually murder someone who acts like players do today)
