BDO World Professional Darts Final
The final of the Lakeside World Darts Championship pitted 150-1 outsider Phil Nixon against Martin Adams, Number 1 in the world, but a choker.
It started brilliantly for Adams, as Nixon couldn't win a set. Adams finishing was great. Nixon's scoring let him down, and by the interval, the match seemed over as Adams led 6-0 in sets.
After the interval, Adams led 2-1 in legs in the 7th set, but he lost it. The crowd erupted as Nixon got onto the scoreboard. 6-1.
With the crowd behind him, Nixon began to come back. Adams had lost from huge leads before, and this could have been another one lost. Nixon kept coming back. At 6-3, Adams missed two darts at double 12 for the match. At 6-4, Adams missed twice more at double top.
Nixon came back playing excellently to level the match at 6-6 in sets, and the match went to a deciding set.
In which Adams played brilliantly. Nixon's scoring let him down as Adams held his nerve, finally winning with a double 8 to take the set 3-0, and finally win the World Championship at his 14th attempt.
The two 50 year olds had played one of the Lakeside's greatest matches.
