Ellis Hits For Cycle
Mark Ellis helped the A's keep pace with the Angels and Mariners as he hit for the cycle when he singled in the tenth inning. Dan Haren struck out nine in the contest. This has to be a boost for the A's to defeat the best team in American League in the Red Sox winning the game in the 11th inning on a Eric Chavez walkoff home run.
Ken Griffey Jr.: An All Star?
Thought at first that Ken Griffey Jr. wasn't having an All Star year then saw he is second in home runs this season among NL outfielders with 12 tying him with Barry Bonds. Adam Dunn leads with 14 home runs. Griffey Jr. is 8th in RBI's with 32 with Carlos Lee with 52 and Matt Holliday with 44 and Jason Bay with 43 leading NL outfielders in RBI's.
Leading NL outfielders in batting average are Matt Holliday with a .345 average, Aaron Rowand at .319 and Alfonso Soriano at .316 among batters with at least 200 at bats. Griffey Jr. is way down the list at .280 but have no problems with him being an All Star based on his home runs and RBI's.
Watched part of this game on ESPN last night and the Yankees couldn't take advantage of the Red Sox loss in Oakland last night and fell seven games under .500 and into a last place tie with Devil Rays. Matt DeSalvo is no Roger Clemens as the Yankees found out last night. The more teams above the Yankees the harder it will be to catch up with the Red Sox.

Players Having Off Years At Third of Season Mark:
Raul Ibanez: Last year Ibanez had 33 homers and 123 RBI's. At the third of the season mark this year has one homer and 32 RBI's. Slugged .516 last year...372 this year.
Aubrey Huff: 21 homers last year...4 this year...slugging .366.
Jason Lane: 15 homers last year...4 this year...26 homers in 2005...OBP...2006-.318...2007-.175...sent to minor leagues recently.
Joe Crede: 30-94 in 2006....4-22 in 2007....slugged .506 in 2006... .317 this year.
Garrett Atkins: 29-120 in 2006....4-22 in 2007....slugged .556 in 2006... .361 in 2007...hit .329 in 2006... .233 in 2007.
Vernon Wells: Signed to 7 year-$126 million contract in December Wells is not close to earning that kind of money: 32-106 in 2006....5-27 in 2007....slugging percentage....542 in 2006... .411 in 2007...hit .303 in 2006....256 in 2007.
Six Blue Jays have more homers than Wells....seven have better slugging percentage than Wells. Eight have higher batting average than Wells.
Morgan Ensberg: 23-58 in 2006...5-15 in 2007. Two years ago had 36-101.
Miguel Tejada: 24-100 in 2006...6-30 in 2007. Tejada is hitting for average and has a chance at 200 hits this season.
Adam LaRoche: 32-90 in 2006....6-31 in 2007...slugged .561 in 2006... .381 in 2007.
Derrek Lee: Since Lee didn't play much last year am comparing this year with his career year of 2005. 46-107 in 2005... 6-34 in 2007. Though his power numbers are off he is currently leading NL in hitting at .357.
Pat Burrell: 29-95 in 2006....6-24 in 2007....Only positive for Burrell is that he had 98 walks in 2006 and has 42 in only a third of the season in 2007 so should have over a 100 walks this season for the first time in his career. Slugging percentage has gone down from .502 in 2006 to.385 in 2007.
Lance Berkman: 45-136 in 2006....6-30 in 2007....Slugging dropped from .621 to .339 this year. Average was .315 in 2006... .238 this year.
Alfonso Soriano: 46-95 in 2006 to 7-17 in 2007. Is on a pace to have more doubles than last season and already has more triples with 3 this season with 2 in each of the last two seasons. His batting average has improved from .277 to .316 this year. If he can start hitting with power he can still help the Cubs. So far he is not earning his $10 million salary but it is a long season and he may be still be able to hit 30 homers and drive in 90 runs.
Jason Giambi: 37-113 in 2006....7-23 in 2007. 110 walks in 2006...only 25 this year.62 extra base hits in 2006...12 this season.
Jim Thome: 42-109 in 2006....8-21 in 2007. On base percentage is better this year at .470 compared to .416 last year. Had 107 walks in 143 games in 2006...36 walks in 33 games this year.
Frank Thomas: 39-114 in 2006...8-22 in 2007. Slugging percentage in 2006...545... .386 in 2007.
Manny Ramirez: 35-102 in 2006....8-32 in 2007....slugged .619 in 2006.... .467 this year. Since his first full season in 1995 Ramirez has never hit below .292 in a season and is hitting .286 as of today. Ramirez is making over $17 million this season.
J.D. Drew: 20-100 in 2006....2-17 in 2007. Drew can be thankful for having Scott Boras for his agent because he sure isn't earning his $14 million salary this season. Drew has only 9 extra base hits after having 60 last season. He slugged .498 in 2006 and only .311 this season. After this season he will have made $52 million playing baseball. 11 Red Sox have higher slugging percentage than Drew among 13 players listed.
8 Red Sox players have more hits than Drew....7 have more doubles....7 have more home runs. Alex Cora also has 2 homers but in 83 less at bats. I have never been a J.D. Drew fan after he dissed the Phillies when he was drafted by them so am enjoying his offseason. I believe a player should go to the team they are drafted by and not pull stuff like Drew, John Elway and others who are drafted then refuse to play for that team.
Paul Konerko: 35-113 in 2006....8-27 in 2007. Slugging percentage was .551 in 2006 and .401 in 2007. Batting average was .313 in 2006 and .229 in 2007.
Carlos Delgado: 38-114 in 2006....8-34 in 2007. Slugging went from .548 to .311 this year.
Troy Glaus: 38-104 in 2006 to 8-24 in 2007.
Ryan Howard: 58-149 in 2006....10-35 in 2007. 84 extra base hits in 2006....16 in 2007. Slugging went from .659 in 2006 to .496 in 2007. Batting average dipped from .313 in 2006 to .217 this season. Part of his decline can be attributed to injuries so he may still hit 35 homers and drive in 100 runs this season.
Albert Pujols: 49-137 in 2006....11-31 in 2007. 83 extra base hits to 22 this season. On base percentage dropped 55 points from .431 in 2006 to .378 in 2006. Slugging dropped from .671 in 2006 to .510 this year. He is hitting .292 currently which is 38 points below his lifetime average of .330.
