7
Vote

Mark Cuban is considering starting a rival league to compete with the NFL.

He cites the reason as "pro football demand equalling pro football supply."

I think he's mostly right, but tends to overstate it. It's true that there's a lot of talent that doesn't get paid. Remember, second-day draft picks are not guaranteed contracts. So you could probably piece together 5-10 quality teams, if you focused on second-day picks and UFAs. The problem is that the salary upside isn't going to be the same, and that a lot of players who are going to be available have huge question marks. So I think you'll see a lot of imbalance.

I think he means the supply of pro-football games and entertainment versus the demand for it... With that said, I doubt the league will ever be as popular as the NFL, however to create a minor league NFL seems like an interesting prospect...especially if the rules are similar/the same...considering where the NFL is now, people might opt to go see the Columbus "Buckeyes" or something for $20 a ticket and cheap food/booze over the easy $50 a seat and expensive stadium bengals or browns...

He does mean that, but his labor supply method is to compete for the guys I mentioned -- 2nd day picks and UFAs.

barring some mysterious funding, yes... Seriously though, if someone offered a Peyton Manning or LT, X dollar amount (ridiculously large) and somehow guaranteed, would they leave...lets assume they would get the same amount of exposure such that their reputation in order to get endorsements isn't damaged...

Like this has never been thought of before. Cuban might want to pop a call over to Vince McMahon. However on the plus side, He Hate Me is probably looking for a job.

Looks like he's a Raider in need of a haircut.

Won't hurt the NFL at all. AFL franchises have trouble staying put and not folding. You essentially lose the entire 14-18 year old audience, plus their parents, plus high school teachers and coaches. Not to say that that's a lot of people, but those are probably the one's most willing to take a chance on watching a new league. It'll be playing third fiddle to the NFL and AFL. the talent would be really low. The best AFL player is about a practice squad NFLer, so he'd be digging himself a pretty dang big hole

Cuban should be spending this time focussed on bring a NBA championship to Dallas and not recycling an old idea that has never financially survived.

Nothing really for the owner to do at this point. Off season not started, and most of the scouting is done by the staff

Will the owners be permitted to attack refs when the refs blow a call?

Roger Goodell just suspended Mark Cuban for 8 games.
