Mariotti Responds

10
Vote

Jay Mariotti wrote a response to Ozzie's remarks in the Chicago Sun-Times today. Apparently things are a bit worse in the White Sox clubhouse than thought. See link for the article.

A couple of really good points there. It is quite ironic that the man who helped get Marge Schott out of baseball is letting Ozzie run amuck.

I find it so ironic that Reinsdorf is on MLB's Equal Oppurtunity Committee.

This is a self-centered, egotistical, approch at martydom. Mariotti says this is not about him, yet plays himself as the victim and the only honest writer in Chicago. Does he really expect people to belive the garbage he is flinging? Ozzie shoudl be fined, to send a message that the Sox do not want to be represented in such an impulsive, careless way. That's how I feel about Guillen, he is careless, impulsive, and irrational, but I can't believe he actually was calling Mariotti a homosexual. He was using the term as most of us do to call one of our friends whimp. Like Arnold, calling someone a 'girly man', it has the same connotation. A 2 week suspension? Ha.

It doesn't matter why he used the term, or against whom, or in what context. He used it, and it was an offensive slur. Excusing that is condoning bigotry. Using the slur casually is offensive as well, in some ways even more so. Your little comparisons are so off-base as to be totally irrelevant.

A two-week suspension is letting him off easy.

That is by far the best piece of writing I have ever read from Jay Mariotti - and, for once, I agree with him.

I love the fact that when players and managers give the same old cliched answers to everything and go the PC route people get upset at them for not being honest, and then when people do give their honest opinions we roast em for it. Ozzie has been fined an undisclosed amount by Bud Selig and ordered to undergo sensitivity training..FYI.

And no, I do not condone what Guillen said.

A fine isn't enough. He should be suspended. Maybe not if it were a first time offense, but it's not a first time offense. They have to put numerous bleeps in all of his post-game interviews, and it's worse after a loss. The man needs to learn to control what comes out of his mouth. This isn't an issue of being honest, it's an issue of being out of control, arrogant and vulgar.

Exactly right, ASwaff. The fine is another spineless Selig solution, the man who hates to get anybody mad at him (besides the fans, of course, who he doesn't care about) is at it again.

I couldn't agree more with this article. That was fantastic. Mariotti's right - his antics are coming way too frequently for comfort. I mean, flying off the handle once in a while is one thing. This guy is doing it almost on a daily basis. His temper and his mouth are out of control, and Selig needs to do something about it, because the White Sox front office obviously won't. But, it also appears Selig won't. Once again, fame and ratings come before logic and decency.

The thing is, if you wanna bust a players balls, you do it behind closed doors. You wanna bust a media guy's balls, you just no comment your way out, they hate that. Guillen is just feeding the fire. Worst of all was his apology, I think that was really lame. I think mariotti (Who was on PTI last night talking about it) was a little bit of a whimp in not accepting, but, guillen truly did not apologize. I think if you take guillen's intentions, he just meant to criticize mariotti, which is fine, but he truly shoudl apologize to those he offended...that's what I really didn't like...

I agree that this was a well written article and agree with many of Mariotti's points, but this is not the way to do this. Putting their dispute out in public is almost stooping to Guillen's level. If Mariotti wants Guillen to know how he feels, he should talk to Guillen himself, not make himself the story like he did in this article.

I actually think he did it just right with this article. There were moments I kind of cringed at how he referred to himself, but when you consider the options, I'd take publicly humiliating Guillen. The only other option is going to him in person, and as he said - for what? So Guillen can scream and cuss at him behind closed doors? What would that accomplish? We saw Guillen's contrition today when he apologized by calling Mariotti a piece of (bleep). I think that an article showing Guillen's flaws to the public was the best way to handle this, considering how we all know things would go if Mariotti decided to go to him in person.
