Mariotti Hypocritical in Proposed Bryant Deal

"More importantly, Kobe has made no secret of telling people -- repeatedly -- that his first option is Chicago. We laughed a few years ago when he took a recruiting trip here as a free agent, searching for real estate on the North Shore before re-upping with the Lakers. But since then, Bryant has frequently voiced his respect for Paxson and convinced us that his interest is real." - Jay Mariotti

Jay Mariotti must assume that the readership of the Sun-Times is either severely amnesiac or just plain stupid.

After apparently spending a few days massaging a previous blog entry into a full blown hysterical newspaper column, Mariotti once again plays armchair general manager. The back page punk in ever so Napoleon-esque fashion, bewails John Paxson to engineer a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers that would bring Kobe Bryant to Chicago in exchange for Tyrus Thomas and Ben Gordon.

Mariotti is strangely entranced by Kobe Bryant with the preconceived and incorrect assumption that the long time Laker is a somewhat on again, off again reincarnation of Michael Jordan. Most clear thinking NBA followers would disagree. But then again, it is indeed hard to debate logically with the bobble head who once declared on [[ Around the Horn]] that he knew all about basketball shooting skills because he watched Mike play.

Back in 2004, the pundit all but buried Bryant in the Sun-Times with ferocious self-righteousness during the Laker forward's legal battles in Colorado. The case represented the decline of Western civilization and the deathblow for professional sports. Furthermore, when the charges against Bryant were dropped, Mariotti whined, "His supporters will suggest he has been wronged, that Bryant should be able to recoup lost endorsements. Sorry, he still committed adultery, which blows up the favorable image he once carried. It will be interesting to see if some of his holdover firms, such as Nike, feature him in new commercials."

And now Mariotti demands that this very same individual so thoroughly once trashed in his column previously, to become a Chicago Bull. Apparently, the lure of once again bashing a Chicago sports franchise is simply too darn tempting in comparison to maintaining the previous storyboard of prejudging Kobe Bryant's moral character. Interesting.

Jay is very excited about all of Kobe's recent talk and apparently even has mall cops on the Sun-Times payroll to provide the scoop of the century that Bryant once again badmouthed his employer and informed all surrounding hero worshipping shoppers that he was relocating to the Windy City. Some might question Bryant's commitment to his team or any team that he winds up playing basketball for this season. After all, how many times has it been during this off-season that Kobe Bryant has flip flopped on his trade demands?

Bulls fans of course want an NBA title. Whether Kobe Bryant is a piece to the puzzle that garners a championship will be ultimately decided upon by John Paxson.

As for this fan, Mr. Bryant only needs to answer one simple question. Do you want to become a team member of the Chicago Bulls or do you expect to be the Chicago Bulls?

If Kobe is open to the idea of becoming a teammate with this developing young team, the possibility should at least be explored. However, if this is only a lame attempt to become a Michael wannabe at the United Center, John Paxson need not bother taking inquiring phone calls from either Buss or Bryant's agent.

Tyrone Briggs is a self-confessed idiot savant only interested in ripping Jay Mariotti.

Though I would normally be all for piling on Mariotti. I don't think he is necessarily being hypocritical in this situation. His disparaging comments relate to an issue unrelated to basketball. So, I don't think it is necessarily hypocritical to have criticized him over the Colorado issue and then to say that the Bulls should make a trade for him.

Mariotti is infamous for casting moral judgments against others and frequently deplores Chicago based teams for ignoring controversial off-field behavior. Several columns were published in the Sun-Times after the Tank Johnson situation to which Mariotti condemned the Chicago Bears for allowing Johnson to play. Mariotti cares nothing about Kobe Bryant. This story only serves as prop up grandstanding at the expense of Jerry Reinsdorf and John Paxson.
