Mariano Rivera Earns 400th

18
Vote

by user Ufgators

Hall of Fame-caliber pitcher Mariano Rivera earned his 400th save against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. "It's amazing, amazing to even think about it," Rivera offered, after closing out TWO innings again for the New York Yankees, which is no easy task for a closer. "I've been blessed."

Rivera became the fourth major league pitcher to reach 400 saves. The other three include Lee Smith (9/17/1993) , John Franco (4/14/1999) , and Trevor Hoffman (5/06/2005).

To show you how impressive this feat is, let's look at some statistics: there are only four pitchers in the 400 saves club; 20 pitchers in the 300 save club; and the next highest club is the 50 saves club.

In his career, he is 8-1 with a 0.81 ERA with 34 saves in 39 opportunities in 111.2 innings in the postseason. Talk about turning it on when it counts!

"For a guy who has pitched as a closer for less than 10 years, and to have been as consistent as he has been, to get there as quickly as he did, it's just remarkable," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I've been very fortunate. He's been with me the whole time I've been here. I can't tell you what that means."

Even the opposing manager raved about Rivera's historic career.

"On the field and off the field, Hall of Fame," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Young people should look up to him. He's the perfect player."

Mariano Rivera is indeed a Hall of Fame-caliber player. In 1999, he was the AL Rolaids Relief Winner, as well as the World Series MVP! Can you fathom how incredible that is? A RELIEF PITCHER WINNING THE WORLD SERIES MVP! In 2003, he was awarded as the AL LCS MVP.

Rivera is looking to extend his streak of three straight seasons with 40 or more saves in a season. If I could have any pitcher in baseball history to close out a game for me, it will undoubtedly be Mariano Rivera and his 2.31 lifetime ERA.

And to think that he began his career in 1995 as a starter, going 5-3 in 10 games started.

"Every time I go out there, it's business," Rivera, who has been striking fear in opposing hitter's hearts for 12 years, said. "I respect everyone, and I hope I get that respect back."

Mariano Rivera has the lucky benefit of playing for the Yankees, a team that over his career ahs put him in many more opportunities to get saves. I agree that he is the finiest post-season closer in history, but the best closer, I wouldn't agree, in fact, it is hard to argue that any active player at any sport is the best ever at his given position. Everyone knows how fast stats can decline with age, so making assertions now before history is written seems like prescience, difficult to defend. Well written article though, but give me Dennis Eckersley who has pitched 4 times as many innings, or more specifically Eckersley in 1990 for the Athletics.

very good points. I posted under the "sources" the website where I obtained my information for the clubs and members of those clubs. I do agree that Eckersley was a great pitcher, but you even deemed Rivera as the best postseason pitcher in history. Remember, I said if I could have any pitcher close games out for me, it would be Rivera. How can you want someone else pitching for you when you know Rivera's postseason resume?

actually, he is not in proportionally more save situations, as a team can win 5 games 10-4, and not have a save situation, whereas a crappy team can lose 6 out of 10, but their closer can save all 4 wins.

Eckersley has won the ALCS MVP (1988), however in 1992 he was the AL MVP (78% of the vote) and Cy Young Winner. The closest Rivera has ever game to AL MVP is 16% in 2004, good enough for 9th place, but not even the highest ranked pitcher. No Cy Youngs for Rivera either. And Eckersley started closing at age 32, after he'd already wasted his arm for 2519 innings, 3 times more than Rivera has pitched in his career before this year.

yes, the braves led in the ninth, and jorge sosa blew the save, but he was kept in the game for the tenth inning, when the braves were up again, trying to close it out. sosa blew the game again. the announcers said it was two blown saves...would it be scored as a blown save and then an inning later a win?

YOU CAN BLOW 2 saves in one game... you blow the save, have someone replace you as pitcher while you go to another position (RF or 1B), then your team regains the lead while the other pitcher is in (He gets taken out or injured). Then you come back in from right field with the lead and save opportuniy to pitch, then you blow save #2, too... it could happen. Granted, you've gotta suck bad enough to blow two saves and good enough for Coach to call you in for 2 save opportunities and decent enough to play another position. Not that this ever happened to me...

No, no... you blow the save, and another pitcher comes in before the inning is over, your team bats and take the lead, the pitcher who replaced you is in line for the Win, you try to save it again..

nice article..the only thing though is that i dont think its as crazy as you said for a relief pitcher to win a WS MVP...john wetteland (sp?) won it in 1996...if they are all close games, the closer is going to have a shot at saving all 4 wins...by no means is that easy, just not unfathomable

Livan Hernandex, John Wetteland, Tom Glavine, Jack Morris, Jose Rijo, Oral Hershiser, Frank Viola, Bret Saberhagen. And thats just since 1985. Two pitchers in 2001 make 12 WS MVPs in the last 20 years for pitchers, and 9 for every single other position player. Not exactly anything fantastic.

Everyone knows once a player goes to NYC to play for the Yanks, they have to take their Yankee pills, pinstriped pills that give the player ultimate powers and are worth one hundred thousand all-star votes each consecutive year they've been ingested. HOF voters are also known to succumb to the pheromones emitted by players who've taken Yankee pills for multiple years.

What is it that causes such abject hate for anything Yankee among non-fans? Is it an envy thing? I've only ever rooted for one baseball team, but I really wish the mets well in every situation except where it would affect the Yankees. So whats the problem? Does Rivera being a Yankee somehow diminish what he's done? Would he get a pass from you guys if he was the closer for another squad?

And the best part about it - a 2 inning save. What makes Mariano great is not only that he gets all the saves, but often he can be relied upon to come in in the 8th inning, get them out of a jam, and then shut them down in the 9th. Great, great closer. Congrats to Mariano.

He even came back tonight, hung about 10 cut fastballs, but still managed to get out of a first/third jam for #401. There's no else I'd want. If he did play for the Royals, he'd still be considered great (and soon signed by the Yankees). Edgar Martinez did have his number, though: over .500 in his career against Rivera.

The sense of humor and recognition of blatant obvious sarcasm on this site is paltry. Relax guys. If everyone agreed with everyone, this would be the most place on the internet. Sometimes people play devil's advocate just to get the ball rolling. A comment of "Yeah, Rivera is awesome, go Yankees" contributes much less to the discourse than "Give me Eckersley in 1990" or "I like Billy Wagner who just unceremoniously passed 300 saves" or "Bruce Sutter is my guy in the late innings." What is so wrong with those statements on a site that prides itself as an open forum for intelligent opinions and debate?

And furthermore, yes it does seem like more people come down against Yankee players, but that is due to the fact that more people trumpet Yankee players from the rooftops. The more fans a team has (whether bandwagon or not) the more anti-fans a team is going to have, that is the nature of the sporting world.
