- The Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League defeat the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League 3-0 to capture the club's second Stanley Cup.

- Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks joined Gordie Howe to become only the second National Hockey League player to score 600 career goals.

- Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the first player in National Hockey League history to reach 200 points in a season.

- The Hartford Whalers announced that they would move from Connecticut following the 1996-97 season. For the 1997-98 season the club would be renamed the Carolina Hurricanes.
