The Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League defeat the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League 3-0 to capture the club's second Stanley Cup.

Bobby Hull of the Chicago Blackhawks joined Gordie Howe to become only the second National Hockey League player to score 600 career goals.

Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the first player in National Hockey League history to reach 200 points in a season.

The Hartford Whalers announced that they would move from Connecticut following the 1996-97 season. For the 1997-98 season the club would be renamed the Carolina Hurricanes.
