Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, announced that he had purchased a trophy to be presented to the amateur hockey champion of Canada. The trophy became known as the Stanley Cup.

Maurice Richard became the first National Hockey League player to score 50 goals in a regular season.

The Buffalo Sabres set an NHL record when they scored 9 goals in one period against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
