- Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, announced that he had purchased a trophy to be presented to the amateur hockey champion of Canada. The trophy became known as the Stanley Cup.

- Maurice Richard became the first National Hockey League player to score 50 goals in a regular season.
