Manchester United 1 Chelsea 1 (Man U wins 3-0 on penalties): With the Barclays Premier League starting next week, Manchester United and Chelsea raised the curtain in the FA Community Shield. The first 20 minutes of the game was quite slow in the baking hot Wembley Stadium in London, but it picked up when a Jon Obi Mikel header went inches wide for Chelsea. Manchester United came back with 2 shots in 2 minutes when Ryan Giggs had his strike blocked by Petr Cech, and Michael Carrick's attempt from 25 yards went just wide. The game had it's first goal when Patrice Evra crossed the ball into the box and found Giggs, who brilliantly put it in the net to make it 1-0 for Man United. Not to be denied, Chelsea were level on the stroke of halftime on a beautiful goal by new signing Florent Malouda, who was injured in the process. The 2nd half was quite limited in the shot department, so with no extra time, the 2 teams went straight to penalties.

In the shootout, Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard, and Shaun Wright-Phillips all took spot kicks for Chelsea. The result? All were saved by Manchester United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar. Man U converted on their 3 kicks, and the Red Devils defeated Chelsea for the first time in 4 years.

The game was pretty dull, and hopefully that's not a sign of things to come in the BPL next week.

BPL? British Premier League? England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate Leagues you know!

And before you point out Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham being in the English League, that's because Wales was once not recognised, even within Great Britain (hence it doesn't appear on the flag).

But anyways, just to let you know.

They are no longer calling it the EPL. It is now the Barclays Premier League.

They never ever called it the EPL to be fair. Only Americans called it EPL, because of the three letter fondness, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, e.g. It's been the Barclays Premier League for years and years. Was the Carling Premiership before that. Where you sponsor stadium names, we sponsor the Leaugues themselves.

I will switch from Premiership to Premier League, but I will be damned if I am going to start calling it the "BPL"

Villa can hopefully steal a point or three against Liverpool this weekend. Nobody's really in any form, so it's prime time to get some unexpected results.
