Making the Correct Decisions (Harrison or Smith)

Having great receivers will make all the difference in the world when it comes to the win/loss column and making that correct decision while two stud receivers are on the board will ultimately help you win your fantasy league. Chances are you will be faced with the dilemma of drafting either Marvin Harrison or Steve Smith and even though you cannot go wrong by drafting either player there are some minor differences and those differences will be enough reason to go with the better player in the better situation.

As we all know Marvin Harrison is an all-pro and a future Hall-of-Famer and there is no reason to believe that he will show any signs of slowing down this season. Most people believe Harrison has slowed a little bit, however, Harrison has never shown great speed but a consistency at getting open. With his work ethic, his consistent ability to get open, and the best QB in the league look for Harrison to have another great season. On the other hand, Harrison’s downside could be that the Colts acquired Anthony Gonzalez in this years draft and the emergence of Joseph Addai.

Many experts have Smith rated #1 overall at the WR position and there are multiple reasons why you would justify drafting Steve Smith ahead of Harrison. 1) The Panthers and Delhomme will rebound from their sub-par performance last season 2) Smith is younger and much more athletic than Harrison. 3) Smith now has a couple of threats opposite him and defenses will have to play close attention to them. On the other hand, who’s to say Delhomme and the Panthers will rebound and if they don’t you will see another average season out of Smith.

Sure I understand that Smith is younger, faster, quicker, stronger, and a tough match up for any defensive back. However, Harrison plays with the best offensive unit in the league and with his ability to outwit opposing defenses with his perfect route running ability and his uncanniness to find the endzone, Harrison is the obvious choice.

Now let's get real, when has a WR ever made a difference in a football game?!  : )

Yeah, you're right receivers never make much of a difference.

How ridiculous is that?

This is the toughest decision yet. Smith is in his prime, Harrison can still ball like crazy, I feel like Smith will have a better season statistically because they don't have too many other weapons on offense. Harrison's a better receiver overall, Smith is more likely to cram the fantasy stat line. Smith.

Even with Reggie Wayne last season, Harrison caught 95 balls for 1366 yards and 12 TDs.

Smith caught 83 for 1166 and 8 scores, though he did miss two games. The thing that doesn't sell me on Smith is the fact that right now Dwayne Jarrett is at the top of the depth chart on the other side, followed by Keary Colbert, he of the 5 catches for 56 yards last season.

Harrison has all kinds of protection to avoid the double team, and a very good rapport with Manning. Just think if David Carr somehow starts some games for the Panthers...:P

Harrison, and NOT just because I have him as a keeper from last season.

Go with Harrison over Smith. The main reason to do so is durability. Harrison has never really been hurt, while Smith misses games almost every year. Hence, Harrison is the better choice.

This is my thinking as well. Harrison does it year in and year out without suffering any kind of serious injury. Also, it helps when you have Peyton Manning throwing to you instead of Jake Delhomme.

I agree with brendan 100%, you know what you're getting with Harrison...Smith may produce more, but its also riskier...for a WR, you want dependability, because consistant points are nice from that position...a rarety in fantasy

I would absolutely take Harrison over Smith. He stays healthy, plays with a better QB (who also stays healthy), has a better running and receiver corps around him, a better offensive line (running routes takes time) and he plays half of his games indoors and two of his road games against Houston and Tenessee. No contest.
