Making the Correct Decision (R. Williams or J. Walker)

Both receivers are #1 options on any fantasy franchise and each player possesses game-breaking abilities. Javon Walker proved in Denver that it doesn’t matter who throws him the ball and should once again put up impressive numbers in 2006. With Denver’s run game we should see plenty of production and possibly another season of 1300 and 8+ touchdowns from Walker. However, without a viable receiving threat opposite Walker he could face numerous double teams.

On the other hand, Roy Williams has continued to showcase his abilities by giving opposing defenses headaches. Now, with Calvin Johnson opposite and the 100 catch man Mike Furrey, double teams are non-existent and Williams should produce his best numbers as a professional.

Here are a few more things to consider when deciding on which receiver is the better option:

1. Jon Kitna is talking about throwing 50 touchdowns, while 2nd year pro Jay Cutler is still finding himself in the NFL.

2. Denver will protect Cutler whereas Kitna will find himself in many hurried situations.

3. Detroit hasn’t proven capable of running the ball since Barry Sanders’ retirement and Denver is notorious for stretching defenses with both the run and pass.

This really is a tough situation when you consider the fact that Calvin Johnson could either hurt or help Williams’ situation and when you consider that Walker is the only receiving threat on the Broncos. Both players are even in their abilities and may produce similar type numbers. However, Williams has a slight edge because Detroit’s will have to play from behind in most contests while forcing multiple passing situations for Williams.

take Walker. YOung QB's tend to look to the first option a lot because they get the most reps together and have the best rythum

Walker is the only receiving threat on the Broncos?!?! Ever heard of Rod Smith, Brandon Stokely or Daniel Graham? This is a tough call, because both guys are entering their primes. I'll take Walker, just because I trust Jay Cutler more than I trust Jon Kitna.

Meg, when i saw this on sitescout, all i saw was "Walker is the only receiving threat..." and I was about to yell at you...then i saw the completed standment...and I'm done...

However, I'd actually trust Kitna over Cutler...Kitna is a more proven commodity than Cutler (and i just don't like Cutler)...and he's in a pass heavy offense...

overall, I see Williams getting more touches than Walker...and with Shanahan known as a running coach and Martz's Offense known for throwing...I see roy having a better fantasy year

I just think Cutler is going to put up better numbers than Kitna, even though he's in a Martz offense. It obviously didn't do much for him last year.

I don't know about not doing much for Kitna last year Meg...he did hit 62.4 percent of his passes, 7.1 ypa, 4208 yards, all career highs. His rating was just a tick under 80 at 79.9, with 21 TD and 22 INT, and he was dumped 63 times. That is more the fault of the "line" then Kitna himself. His biggest issue was fumbling, as he coughed it up 11 times, losing 9.

Just for the record, Furrey caught 98, not 100. He did, however set an NFL record for most catches by a non rookie following a season of zero catches, previously held by Lionel Taylor in the old AFL with Denver in 1962. That said, I tend to lean toward Williams just because I have a little more faith in a vet like Kitna then Cutler at this stage of the game.

Javon Walker's talented, but I'm going with Roy Wlliams. Physically gifted receivers do very well in Mike Martz's offensive system. I think Williams may develop into the next Torry Holt. Plus, weather will have less of an effect as he will be playing 9 (8 home games, 1 at Minnesota) indoors, as well as a November road game in Arizona and a December road game in San Diego.

I love this site! So much dialogue it's crazy! Thanks for all your comments here. Like most of you said this is a tough match up and could possibly go either way. Meg, Walker is right now a one man show and I do know about the others, but Smith is aging, and the other two do not pose much of a threat. Cast your votes using the link at the bottom of the page.

I would take Walker as well. Sure, his mind may be gone because of shooting last year and its impact it may have had. However, he has more physical talent than Williams, and I think Denver is the better offensive team as well.
