Making the Correct Decision (R. Brown or Burress)

This situation came up in one of the drafts that I participated in this past weekend. Which player to select here could make all the difference in the world when it’s fantasy playoff time. If McNabb does not remain on the field or Manning finally finds some sort of rhythm this season you could find yourself in a world of trouble if you decide to select Reggie Brown over Plaxico Burress.
Sounds like a pretty easy decision if you select Brown considering the fact that Eli Manning has struggled since entering the league in 2004 and has thrown 44 interceptions compared to only 54 touchdowns. Add in the fact that Burress has never had a season with more than 80 catches and without any type of big play ability, we could see the same type of numbers from his 2006 campaign where he caught 68 balls for a mere 988 yards. However, Burress did manage to catch 10 touchdowns and if Manning has improved we could see the best season of Burress’ career.
On the other hand, Brown is emerging as a quality receiver in this league and finds himself in an ideal situation with the return of Donovan McNabb. He is also the Eagles primary receiver and with options offensively Brown should see plenty of open looks. Brown is also coming into his 3rd season as a starter and if you look at his first year numbers compared to last seasons you will see major improvement (+250 yards and +4 touchdowns). Brown plays with one of the best quarterbacks in the league and we could see a career season from him with over 1200 yards and 10+ touchdowns.
In my most recent draft Reggie Brown went in the 5th round (53 overall) while Burress found himself a home with the 51st overall selection. I personally feel Brown is the better option in this situation, especially if McNabb stays healthy.
