Making the Correct Decision (Owens or Fitzgerald)

16
Vote

by FanProphet

I don’t think this is so much of a tough decision, but more like a personal preference or a personal vendetta on which of these two players you will choose.

We all know that Owens has all the tools to remain a top receiver in this league. However, will he remain accountable, does he have the quarterback, and does he possess the control needed to remain focused and produce his typical all-pro type season? We all can remain focused on Owens’ short-comings, but when we take a minute to focus on his attributes we cannot deny his unquestionable abilities.

On the other hand, we have the mild mannered, humble, and business like wide-out Larry Fitzgerald. Never complains, shows up for work, plays hard every game, and has the ability and talent to produce the same types of numbers as any top receiver in this league. However, he also plays on a team in question with an unproven quarterback and a suspect offensive line.

Here are a few things to consider when you’re in the quandary of selecting Terrell Owens or Larry Fitzgerald.

1. Owens remains the best athlete on the field at all times.

2. Fitzgerald is the younger receiver coming into only his 4th season and has a tremendous upside.

3. Owens is playing with the better team and Dallas is surely a favorite to make the playoffs and possibly win the NFC East where Owens will play a huge role.

4. Owens is a veteran receiver and even though he lacks leadership off the field, his peers do respect his on the field ability.

5. Leinart could be considered the better quarterback and the Cardinals could have the better overall offense.

6. Fitzgerald does not drop as many balls.

7. Fitzgerald has a quality receiver opposite him and defenses have to respect both as touchdown threats at all times.

That’s how I see this situation. I also see Owens as the better option and possibly the best receiver in the league. Therefore, when making a decision do not allow your personal dislike of Owens interfere with “making the correct decision” in your upcoming fantasy draft.

Make your decision here.

"Owens remains the best athlete on the field at all times."

Unless Dallas is playing San Diego (LT and Antonio Gates), Detroit (Calvin Johson), and a bunch of other guys I can't think. TO is a hell of an athlete, but he's not the best in the league.

I don't like TO, and I don't like him as a fantasy receiver.

Fitzgerald.

I'm calling you out meg...even as an eagles fan who now hates owens, I will tell you, he's probably among the best pure athletes i've ever seen. Say what you want about Owens, but he cares about his body and always wants to be in game shape...if he misperforms for any reason, it won't be because he didn't want/try to be physically ready...

as an example...look at his comeback for SB 39...he broke a leg and came back in less than 8 weeks...and played pretty damn well too...

Here's the hitch with Owens vs Fitz...This year, Owens is most likely better...however...I realllllyyyy don't like Tony Romo (not personally, i just don't think he's very good)...and the cowboys line is suspect...then again...speaking of offensive lines...the arizona cardinals don't exactly have a good one either. I'd say by week 2 you'll know who is better, but right now, i'd got fitz only because the upside of leinart and fitz is higher and less risky than romo and owens (although romo's favorite target is owens)

I'd take Owens the player over Fitzgerald because Owens has been around longer, and is a very good player.

I'm not saying TO isn't a great athlete, he absolutely is. There are just better ones in the league, in my opinon.

I'd go TO and not thats not because I'm a Cowboys fan.

1) Both Romo and Wade Phillips have no problem with TO and they are willing to give him the ball

2) Romo has already thrown to TO a lot and many touchdowns as well last season.

3) TO is healthy so he will not drop as many balls (Broken finger last season)

4) Fitzgerald has competition, Boldin. They're going to share passes

I like TO here, he's going to have a mosnter year, even better than last season (1180 yards, 13 TD's).

Romo's favorite target it owens...

You're pretty right on (except for the monster year part...heh) and the finger issue. Owens didn't just break a finger, by playing with it, he severely damaged the nerve and he'll probably never been the same. With that said, he did most of those 1180 yds and 13 TDs with the problem...so the dropped balls, while an issue for the team, aren't fantasy wise...

Also, Owens has to share with Mrs. Glenn (As Parcells would say)

You're are convincing Insan...I'm at a push right now

It's not like TO doesn't have competition--Glenn had 70 receptions and over 1000 yards. However, Boldin might be the #1 receiver now, at least from a fantasy perspective. If this were the top two receivers available at my pick, I'd take TO.

Yea, but isn't the finger he broke like a ring finger or something? I don't think it really matters if you can't feel anything on your ring finger. Well I guess he's gotta becareful of people robbing him of his Super Bowl ring after the season. ;-)

Boldin and Fitzgerald are way more of an even matchup as far as talent goes than Glenn and Owens. In arizona you can go both ways for a #1 option, in dallas, the #1 option is clearly Owens.

Insan - I am up to challening you on T.O. I say he misses at least two games this season, and has less than 1200 yards recieving, and less than 10 TD's.

So basically if he plays only 13 games, has only 1000 yards but scores 11 td's, I win the challenge?

I can see both sides of the argument from Christof and Insan's points of view.

Owens is a vastly better receiver than Glenn, and will see a majority of the passes in the Dallas offense directed his way. Fitzgerald will have to share the ball with Boldin and potentially Bryant Johnson.

The difference between the two is the fact that the Cards will be throwing the ball a lot more than Dallas. With the platoon of Julius Jones and Marion Barber III, who combined for 1738 rushing yards and 18 rushing TDs, the Cowboys have a more balanced offense.

After Edge, who struggled to 1159 yards, a paltry 3.4 average, and a long of 18 yards, the leading rusher from last season on the Cards was Matt Leinart, with a whopping 49 yards. The Cardinals averaged just 83.6 yards a game on the ground last season, and played from behind for most of the season, meaning there are a lot more passing opportunities to be had.

Owens has actually only played two full 16 game seasons since 1999. However, his average season in those nine years is 78.6 receptions for 1145.25 yards and 11 scores.

Fitzgerald has the youth factor, the young gun of a QB, the lack of a running game, and the crisp routes that can easily make him a 100 reception guy for years to come. I would take Fitzgerald by the slimmest of margins.

The thing with Fitzgerald is that he's in a pass happy team. The Cowboys finally have a RB that could replace Emmitt with Marion Barber. So Dallas is a little more balanced.

You go with Fitz hands down here. First, T.O. is aging, and aging fast. He is not the receiver he once was. And dare I say, he is injury prone. Second, T.O. is a tocking time bomb. The magic number is THREE, three losses, and he becomes a locker room cancer. Third, Fitz has a better QB and is on a better offense. Fourth, Fitz is just reaching his prime. These are four reasons why you should choose Fitz over Owens.

He's not a locker room cancer anymore due to his contract. You can't use that excuse anymore. First, Jerry Jones is in love with TO and will pay him big bucks. Also, Jones is a genius because he structured TO's contract so that every year he successfully stays on the team, he gets a huge bonus. If he's a cancer, he's off the team and no big bonus.

Na, I disagree. :)

Just you wait. T.O. is going to throw Romo under the bus this season. I say it will be after the third Cowboys loss of the season.

Do you really think T.O. is now suddenly going to be good when, in the past, he has turned on the Tuna, the Eagles, the Niners....?

Yea he will be, for the reasons I stated. He's all about money and Jerry is taking care of him. If he becomes a cancer after the third loss of the season then he must be throwing Romo under the bus in week 16, which doesnt make any sense. :)

You realize that T.O. would have made more money with the Eagles right? At some point, that is going t click, and he will start whining again. Anyway, T.O. has serious mental and emotional issues. See his attempted suicide during last season. If he does not get the attention or money, he goes off his rocker. He will do so again this season.

See? That's why you're not credible. What you said about the suicide is so biased. What was the contract TO had with the Eagles? There's no way he would've made more money there than with the Cowboys. If it wasn't for the salary cap, Jones would be spending as much money if not more than Steinbrenner.

depends on how you look at it...owens signed a 7 year 49 mil deal with the eagles...and a 3 year 25 mil with the cowboys...however, the eagles deal was designed to allow for him to reup about halfway through based on performance....the cowboys deal, while paying him more on average, sets him up poorly when he's aging and is personally riskier

Insan, you are truly a big time Cowboys fan. IT must be killing you to know that the Eagles are the team to beat in the NFC East, yet again. :)

As far as T.O.'s contract with the Eagles. If you look at the money he lost in 2005 plus the money he would have earned last year, it was substantially more than what he made with Dallas in 2006 and 2007.

See, T.O. signed a contract that paid him mad money for the 2004 season. For the 2005 season, the money was small. However, under the contract, T.O. pay would have been close to $10M for 2006.

Yet, of course, went off his rocker. Became the cancer that he was with the Niners, and got sent home.

T.O. will become a cancer yet again. Sooner rather than later.

Here's the story. http://sport...y?id=2374189 Special attention to the following quote: "After his windfall this season, Owens will get salaries of $8 million in 2007 and $7 million in 2008. All told, it's a lot more than he would've made under the contract with Philadelphia that began his bad blood with the organization."

Not exactly, he still has 2 years left. This season he's probably gonna be awesome. Next season, age 34, I dont see much of a decline but I doubt he'll be as awesome as this season. If he keeps his good behavior up, then theres a contract extention waiting for him. Jerry Rice was still helping out significantly at age 40. Now, TO isn't Rice obviously but I'm just trying to prove that WR's have a longer life span than other positions on the field except for kickers.

Let's take a look at Dallas. In addition to Owens, they have Witten, Glenn, Barber, Jones, heck even Crayton is coming along. With all the offensive potential there and defenses keying on Owens because, well, he's Owens. How long before he has a three catch 25 yard game with zero TDs? How much longer before he starts to complain?
