Making the Correct Decision (Maroney or Henry)

by FanProphet

We all know that choosing the correct player at the right time in your fantasy draft will make all the difference in the world when it comes to winning championships. However, drafting can be exceptionally difficult and without doing your own research you will find yourself in the leagues basement before you can say the word ‘go’.

Another first or high second round dilemma that you will be confronted with this season is whom to draft, Laurence Maroney or Travis Henry.

Unlike Westbrook/Bush, Jacobs/Jones or McGahee/Parker, this situation is perplexing because neither back has the “name” that we can depend on if or when the clock begins to wind down. However, this dilemma will arise and making the correct decision is extremely important if you want to remain competitive in your fantasy league.

The similarity in both of these backs are frightening; they’re both young enough to carry the full load, they play on AFC contenders, they are in a situation to receive an equal amount of touches, and their durability has been an issue throughout their careers.

We all know that Maroney is a special player that runs with overwhelming intesity, explosiveness, and determination. Maroney is young, in an ideal situation playing alonside an excellent passing game, and a Pats defense who has the ability to create multiple opportunities for this offense. The AFC conference will have to go through New England this season to play in the Super Bowl and stopping Maroney will be opposing teams biggest nightmare while having to worry about the Pats passing game.

Henry also finds himself in an ideal situation in Denver where he will receive the majority of the workload in this relatively young offense. During his career Henry has not been in the most opportune situations in Buffalo and Tennesse, however, he still managed to post over 1200 rushing yards in three out of his six seasons. Even though Henry approaches his seventh season, he should still be considered young due to the fact that he hasn’t carried the ball more than 300 times in each of his last three seasons. Denver is notorious for turning average backs into NFL All-Pros, however, over the past few seasons they have not shown a willingness to stick with a true “feature” back.

In my recent analysis of runningbacks I have Maroney 8th and Henry 9th and after looking closer into these two situations my mind hasn’t changed. Maroney is in a better situation with a better passing game and the Pats only true runner.

Maroney has the best upside...he also has a decent potential to get fewer carries and get hurt

Maroney is an absolute stud. If he stays healthy, he will run for at least 10 touchdowns and 1,400 yards.

If I'm choosing between the two, I go with Maroney. At the time of the draft where you're picking one of these guys, you're looking for a foundation of your team, so having as little variance in possible numbers is key here. When it comes to picking my first-round RB, I don't trust Shanahan any further than I can throw him.

Mike Anderson. Terrell Davis. Tatum Bell. Clinton Portis. Reuben Droughns. What do they all have in common? They all ran for 1000 yards in Shanahan's zone blocking scheme. With Jay Cutler being the QB in the Mile High City, I can see the run setting up the pass. That means a lot of carries for Henry, who did surpass 1300 yards twice in Buffalo, making the weather and an inexperienced QB less of a factor. Maroney will be good, but with the plethora of WR talent on the Pats, they would be remiss to focus on handing the ball off and grinding it out when they, at least on paper, should be able to throw it all over the place. I would take Henry by the slightest of margins over Maroney, unless you are in a keeper league. However, neither of them are in the plateau of LJ, LT, Stephen Jackson, Shaun Alexander and the like.

I would go with Maroney for these reasons. Maroney plays in a better offense and even though the passing game is going to be their bread and butter, RBs in great offenses aren't keyed on as much as RBs in mediocre offenses with an unproven QB like Cutler. I also think Maroney will get more receptions in the NE offense compared to Henry in Denver, as well as more TD's. Also, Denver RBs always seem to get hurt. I see Maroney having a break out year more than I see any fire works out of Henry. Good topic.

Totally agree. Henry against 8 and 9 man fronts or Maroney against teams back pedaling to stop Moss and Stallworth?

I wouldn't touch either one if they were the last two on the board. Either one will be a waste of a draft pick in fantasy football.

Meg's a huge homer, but she's got this one pegged. Assuming Maroney's shoulder is better he should get about 1400 yds and 10-12 TDs. I think that Henry will split carries in Denver. His style fits their blocking scheme so he should see good numbers, just not as good as Maroney.
