Making the Correct Decision (James or Benson)

Veteran leadership on an up and coming team or first year starter on defending NFC Champions. Who is the better selection when you’re faced with this dilemma in the middle or late 3rd rounds of your leagues fantasy draft?

We all know what Edgerrin James is capable of doing evidenced by his career 10k yards and 81 touchdowns, but will James repeat his efforts from last season where he only averaged 3.4 yards per carry and only 6 scores? On the other hand, we just witnessed over the past two seasons what a decent back is capable of doing inside this Bears system. Is Benson better than Thomas Jones and will he prove why the Bears didn’t hesitate to let Jones head to the Jets?

While James is the proven back, age and playing on a below .500 team is somewhat of a concern for this nine year veteran. Chances are the Cardinals will play from behind in most games this season which could effect James’ overall touches. However, considering the Cardinals passing game, James could make up for his decline in carries with catches out of the backfield.

Injury has been a problem in his first 2 seasons as a professional, but Benson obviously has the tools to succeed in this league or the Bears would’ve kept the proven Thomas Jones. Considering the Bears will remain a top defense, Benson should see many short field opportunities which will help his overall touchdown production. Anything inside the 5 yard line and it’s Benson, Benson, Benson!

I am normally apprehensive with drafting RB’s who are past their prime, however, James is in a similar situation in Arizona to that of Indianapolis. A young team with a great passing game and a weak defense. Has James lost a step or two? Probably! However, he still maintains his ability to run between the tackles. Therefore, James is the obvious selection in this situation.

Who will you choose?

Benson hasn't lived up to his billing (yet), Edge is old and has no o-line (Levi Brown does not constitute an entire o-line). I never liked Edge anyways; he always looked ridiculous with those gold teeth. Benson.

Give me Benson. I think he has more potential at this point to put up better numbers. However, either way I think you'll have a good RB option on your hands.

Benson. Better line, weaker quarterback, game plan built around running the ball. No contest.

I would have to go to Cedric Benson in this case. James's longest run last season was a measly 18 yards. The line has a RG who didn't play at all last season, and Mike Gandy at RT. Brown has yet to take the top slot at LT away from Wells and as Meg says, it doesn't make an O line with one guy. Until the AZ defense shows it can stop other teams from racking up points, any Cards RB would be a dud play.
