Major Applewhite: Top Coaching Prospect

Watch out Pat Fitzgerald! Major Applewhite could become the youngest head coach in the history of college football.
Watch out Pat Fitzgerald! Major Applewhite could become the youngest head coach in the history of college football.

Just six years ago, Major Applewhite was the quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, battling fellow teamate Chris Simms to be the team's starting quarterback. He led the Longhorns to combeack win after another.

Now, at just twenty-eight years of age, Applewhite is the the nation's hottest coaching prospect with his career is on the fast-track toward becoming a Head Coach. He is just three years removed his Graduate Assistant days with the Longhorns and is now Alabama's offensive coordinator.

Even he admits that even he is surprised by how quickly he has moved up through the ranks. It has been reported that the Rice head coach opening was Applewhite's for the taking, but he deemed the Alabama coordinator's position as a more advantageous career move.

Applewhite's rise through the coaching ranks show how the big stars aren't always the best coaches. If Nick Saban leads Alabama to the top of the SEC, expect Applewhite's phone to be ringing on the hour.

Looks like Major made the right move then - forget the long shot NFL career, and go into coaching. Good call!

Saban keeps collecting NCAA recruit violations, Major may get his shot sooner rather than later.

I don't know if he viewed moving to Alabama a more advantageous career move as much as he viewed it an opportunity to go where he's always wanted to be. His parents were HUGE Alabama fans, and in fact named him after former Alabama player Major Ogilvie. He wanted to go go Alabama, but they had already signed two QB prospects, so he settled for UT. Good career move. He's gonna make a great head coach someday. I hope the Longhorns are smart enough and influential enough to get him to replace Mack Brown.

I think it would be awesome. And it would be appropriate retribution by the university for Mack Brown benching Applewhite in favor of Simms, even though Applewhite repeatedly showed himself to be the better QB.

Too true, Beast. It's like I keep trying to tell people down here - Mack Brown didn't take Texas to the Rose Bowl anymore than Phil Garner took the Astros to the World Series. Brown rode the back of Vince Young and other outrageously talented players the same way Garner rode the backs of Clemens, Pettitte and Oswalt, just as he rode the back of Beltran to the NLCS the year before. And Greg Davis getting offensive coordinator of the year when Vince Young ran amock on the field is just a joke.

That is an absolutely ridiculous statement. Every good coach rides the talent of his players. The trick is getting the good players to come and instilling in them enough discipline to get the job done, and don't try to say that the recruiting at Texas takes care of itself because it doesn't. Just ask John Mackovic. Besides Mack Brown has had the golden touch everywhere he has been. With that said, if you guys remember back to VY's sophomore year everyone probably including the both of you wanted Mack to convert him into a reciever. A bad coach would have done just that. As far as it goes for your cute math up there, Mack Brown was winning football games before VY was even a thought, and he is still winning them after VY.
