MY CITY CAN BEAT UP YOUR CITY

8

by user Jamel

Fun on Friday.

I thought a nice and simple debate/discussion could occur over who has the best sports city? Now, I'm not looking for answers like Boise, Idaho cause they are cool or have the Potato Baseball league. No, I'm looking for some great reasons on why this city is such a great sports town-- great history? great players? championships?

Stuff like that.

Just thought this would be fun.

Chicago, of course, is the best sports city on the face of this earth. Bears Bulls Sox are all awesome. Our stadium beers are only 6 bucks. Remember the drunk/methed out father and son team at U.S. Cell a couple of years ago - that was pretty funny. Also that time Ozzie called local sportswriter Jay Mariotti a "fag." Plus, the Bears Franchise INVENTED modern day football, and continues to change the face of the game every decade.

Did you know the Bears were the first team to actually watch tape to prepare for opponents? The first team to have daily practices? They were also the first team to put a refrigerator on the field. And that guy Dick Butkis is pretty cool. Remember how he used to growl at opponents when lining up? That was AWESOME!

Chicago also doesn't have fans that whore themselves off to opposing cities either. That is pretty impressive for hometown loyalty and support.

And look at the bears now:

Brian Urlacher - AWESOME Devin Hester - AWESOME Robbie Gould - AWESOME Olin Kreutz - AWESOME (they even made a rule about him because he does funny things with his hands before the snap)

Rex Grossman - HE'S A REALLY NICE GUY

I'll never cease to chuckle when I think of Denny Green. I really think that goes down as the biggest NFL post-game press conference meltdown ever! He was so pissed off. "The ARE who we THOUGHT they were! And WE LET 'EM OFF THE HOOK!" What a dope!

Minneapolis. Championships are few to come by, but we still remain loyal. We show up to the T-Puppies games, and buy the gear. We're the friggen state of hockey. Twins fans are some of the most loyal in sports. We have one of the best NCAA Hockey teams, and Baseball teams. We're rebuilding our Football and Basketball programs, and are loyal to them. We also raised Joe Mauer and Larry Fitzgerald. I'd probably vote Philly or Chicago, but I'm a homer, so what the heck

Miami doesn't suck. When I was down there covering Winter Music Conference the last couple of years, totally hot girls gave me some pills that made me dance for 8 hours straight 3 nights in a row. There is SO MUCH ASS down there that even a skinny guy like me can have a good time. How is this sports related? I met Thomas Jones at this really small club (200 people max) and shook his hand. He called me a crazy white boy.

London. Here is a list of what it has hosted:
  • Test Match Cricket for nearly 130 years (Lord's and The Oval)
  • Three Olympic Games including the 2012 Olympics
  • 1966 World Cup Final - and other England games (Wembley)
  • Masters Snooker (Wembley)
  • About 2/5 of the Premiership is from London (Soccer)
  • Hosts England International Rugby Matches (Twickenham)
  • London Marathon every year for 25 years
  • Rugby League World Cup Final (Wembley)
  • FA Cup Finals since 1863 (Wembley, Upton Park, Crystal Palace, Stamford Bridge)
  • Wimbledon (Wimbledon...)
  • University Boat Race (River Thames)
Practically every major British sporting event takes place in London - the only exceptions are The Open Championship (a links' can only host it and London is nowhere near the sea) and the British Grand Prix, and that has been held in Kent, just down the road in Brands Hatch.

Without NFL, I really don't see it. I'll give you +s for your nationalism though. Snooker will just never be as cool as NFL football. Cricket is too complicated to be a sport. Others have already established that soccer and rugby are for poofs, and golf (an awesome relaxation technique for both the player and the spectator) is just to boring. What IS missing is the fantastic boxing. The UK has some wonderful boxers. Ricky Hatton is the MAN and Joe Calzaghe is incredible to watch!

You know London is kind of cool. Why I've had the pleasure of going there. Canada is nice. London, Ontario, home of the London Knights-- they've won a few championships there. Plus, there is a Labatt brewery or something-- great beer that Labatt stuff- plus I went to a strip club there-- nice ladies-- but I found that most Canadian girls have a beer belly. Yeah London is okay. Since when was tennis popular in Canada?
