MLB Needs to Use Instant Replay

by user Srtellis4585

In the past few weeks, it's become increasing apparent that baseball needs an instant replay system.

  1. In a Philadelphia Phillies game, a ball went off the foul pole, but was called foul. Instant replay could have made the right call.
  2. In the Detroit-Yankees series, A-Rod appeared to have tagged a runner at 3rd base. The runner was called safe.
  3. In the same series, a ball hit by the Tigers seemed to hit the white foul line. However, the ball was called foul.

In all three of these instances, instant replay would have helped make the correct call. Yet, baseball seems to shy away from it. Fortunately for you AGMers, I have a propsal to share.

Throughout the game, the managers would be able to challenge a call. They get just one. As long as the managers are right, they keep their challenge. Get it wrong, they lose it for the rest of the game. Managers would have until the next pitch to challenge. Also, in cases where the umpires need to group up to decide on a call, instant replay will be used immediately. Any call other than balls and strikes would be reviewable. Of course, this is all just a pipe dream, as baseball seems to cling to tradition a bit much.

Yeah I know. I even told myself not to write about instant replay. Shows how much I listen to myself, huh?

I reckon umpires should use instant replay themselves whenever they need to rather than managers getting involved.

You're probably right about that.

I don't like the system that the NFL uses. I don't see why coaches should have to get involved with the officiating. Referees should refer calls to the video ref.

The thing is, often times you see managers arguing calls with the umps, which really doesn't do much for them. This at least gives managers a shot to get a call refersed, and wouldn't necessarily get thrown out in the process.

There's no doubt that MLB needs video replays, however I think the major concern is how often it should be used and how it should be done...

"Fair pole", not foul pole...

NO instant replay... Humans are good enough and say what you want about officials and umpires, baseball's got the best officials by far. Umpires are a part of the game and it's history.

This is how Pro officiating rates: MLB #1, way down the list is NBA officials then even further down is NFL refs. Granted Umps only have to make one call at a time; out-safe, ball-strike, fair-foul...

people bitch that games are too slow (even though they're often an hour shorter than a football game) already. Even with instant replay in the NFL, they STILL get calls wrong all the time because of "inconclusive evidence" - until we get 1000 cameras, ball sensors and thermal imaging on the field, there will still be human error.

Oh...right...fair pole. Woops.

Ok, so if the MLB umps are #1, why not make them better, or at least give them the chance to be?

I just hate it when umps have to make a split second call, and then we can find out after about 2 minutes that the wrong call was made. Give the umps some help and they'll be even better.

At least Detroit's Jim Leyland was a good sport about the call against them saying something like "well, after 3 instant replays in slow motion, I saw it was a fair ball...and if it took that, I'm ok with the ump's call"...nice to see.

With baseball, how much "inconclusive evidence" will there be? It's not like trying a QB sneak on 4th and 1 where there are 20 other bodies in the way. All you need is at most 3 different camera angles, and since most follow the ball anyways, it shouldn't be too difficult.

exactly. Umps are part of the game... the bad calls average out for/against you. I used to have a coach that said bad calls won't beat you. You get 27 outs. Score 10 more runs in the first inning and a bad call in the 9th inning doesn't matter. I like umpires. I only wish they were still AL/NL umpires.

ManWAGON- THAT was the best thing you have said in weeks. KEEP the umpires the way they are, I like the way they call the game. I like when a runner tries to steal a base and is called out cause the ball beat him there even though he technically got his hand on the bag first. I say if the call is that close and the ball beat you there, too bad!!! and like ManWAGON said, it speeds up the game and keeps the UMPs sharp.

Over 162 games, I'm not too sure the odd duff call makes to much difference. Luck evens itself out eventually.

I don't say replace the umpires, I say improve the ones currently standing.

Sport is played best by humans, not computers.

This is why I love cricket and snooker - you can play those games without umpires/referees. Not because it is so simple, but the game pretty much rules itself.

What was with that comment Alex that you made made about Australians have to have umpires in cricket before?

Ok, 162 games yes...but what about a best of 5 or best of 7 series?

I don't want to replace umpires, I want to give them the tools to make it better.

For example, you wouldn't want a mechanic to work on your car and have it be done wrong, would you? I doubt you'd say "oh, well, they're human, they are going to make mistakes, it's ok"...you want them to get it done right and use whatever they need to do so.
