MLB Mid-Season awards

Prince Fielder leads the N.L. with 27 home runs.
Prince Fielder leads the N.L. with 27 home runs.

MVP AL: Alex Rodriguez- It doesn't matter what people think of him, he is the best hitter in the league right now, along with Prince Fielder, and A-Rod's fielding has improved from last year, in my opinion.

NL: Prince Fielder- The NL leader in home runs, this guy is a big boy, and is always going for power. But, actually earlier this season he had an inside the park home run.

Cy Young AL: C.C. Sabathia- Tied for the most wins in the AL, and majors, this guy overpowers hitters, he has 108 K's.

NL: Jake Peavy- Most dominant pitcher in baseball thus far, third in NL ERA (4th in the majors), and he has his team tied with the dodgers for the lead in the NL west (which is no longer the weakest division in baseball).

Rookie of the Year AL: Daisuke Matsuzaka- I don't know if its his gyro ball, or what, but Dice-K has certainly lived up his hype in my book, so far.

NL: Troy Tulowitzki- This young guy may only have 8 HR's, but he is a good fielder, and hits for average most of the time, I think has a great future in front of him as the rockies best player.

Manager of the year AL: Terry Francona- It looks like Boston may finally finish ahead of the yankees, wow, that will be cool.

NL: Ned Yost- Yost has his team, surprisingly sitting on top of the NL central, and he's got a nice 6.5 game lead over the, now, red hot cubs.

Comeback player of the year AL: Sammy Sosa- He is already one home run shy of his last years total (14) with the O's. This year he hit his 600th career home run, and is enjoying his season so far.

NL: Dmitri Young- This is more like a best season, so far, after having many horrible ones. He already matched his HR total from last year (7), and nearly doubled his RBI's. Mainly because he was either injured, or just didnt get much playing time with Detroit last year.

Best team AL: LA Angels- I am gonna have to go with them, because they have the best record in MLB, at 50-30, they are 20 games over .500 and have a 5.5 game lead over the second place mariners.

NL: New York Mets- They are sitting on top of the division by four games, over top of usual division winner, the Atlanta Braves.

Biggest surprise AL: Chicago White Sox- They are 10 games under .500 (33-43), and are 12.5 games back. Their usually fantastic pitching is doing horrible, Ozzie really needs to do something about the '05 World Series champs, and FAST.

NL: Milwaukee Brewers- At this point last year they were 40-40 and third place in the NL central, they finished '06 with a 75-87 record, and were fourth place in their division.

Biggest disappointment AL: New York Yankees- Though they are maybe, sort of, kind of turing it around, the yanks are still a huge disappointment, but A-Rod has not been.

NL: St. Louis Cardinals- The WS champs of last year, are six games below .500 and are third place in the NL Central. Pujols only has 16 HR's, many expected him to be around 25 or 30 by now. Not to mention they are 9.5 games behind of the surprising leader, in the Milwaukee Brewers.

You should give an award for each league - Cy Young, MVP, Rookie - not combined it for just one mid season award.

I know I'm biased, and Fielder is an Excellent choice, but depending on how the season wraps up, I think it may be Jose Reyes for MVP. He gets on, Mets win. Simple as that. But I could accept Fielder. I don't think I'm that surprised by Milwaukee though. Not that there's another big shocker in the NL.

I don't know if that's really fair that the Mets get a win for a guy getting on base when everybody else's guys have to run around all the bases and do it more times than the other team. ;-)

Jose Reyes is good, but he isn't the MVP. Fielder is carrying the Brewers getting on base, scoring runs, and hitting guys in with his 60+ RBIs.

I agree with ARod and while I love Fielder, how about Chase Utley for MVP?

He'd be another candidate that would be hard to argue against. If the Phils were/wind up in first, he'd get my vote. (Not that I have one)

Yep Kelsdad. I have been working 40 hours a week and taking a night class two days a week. There has been very little time for writing. I've been trying to keep an eye on the site though. I will hopefully be back at full force in August/September.

Dan Haren is hands down the Cy Young in the AL at this point.

Hard to argue with a 1.91 ERA in the AL. He "only" has 9 wins because the A's don't score.

Don't worry, Bball. They would never give an award to a Cleveland player anyway.

Just joking you man. Fast food was my first job, which led to culinary school, which led to working 100 hours a week, alcoholism and no sleep. Otherwise you're right, there's nothing wrong with it.

Since you have a biggest surprise and a biggest disappointment shouldn't the AL surprise be someone doing well and the Sox would be a candidate for disappointment?

Haren hasn't given up more than 3 earned runs in a game this season making him the most consistently good pitcher in baseball and with a better offensive team he would would have two or three more wins.

Sammy Sosa is NOT the AL comeback player of the year. Look at the other candidates: Gary Sheffield, Eric Gagne, Fausto Carmona, and you might even make an argument saying that even Hideki Matsui are better than him. Sosa has 13 homers so far. BIG DEAL! He also has a .251 AVG, and a .306 OBP. Not that great for a guy who's juiced.

I also disagree with you on the fact that the White Sox are the biggest disappointment. Although you're right, they ARE pretty surprising this year, I believe the Mariners, the team who's 43-33, and only from the team with the most wins in the MLB, are the biggest surprise this half-season. They had a very disappointing season, and so far, they're doing better than the A's (the division winners from last year), which I'd consider a pretty big disappointment as well. I think that the Yankees are getting too much crap from the media about how bad they are doing and they're not even talking about the other teams that have had dramatic collapses this year, like the A's and the White Sox. I'd also say that Hunter Pence is a better candidate for ROY so far than Tulowitski, but that's just my opinion. Other than that, good picks...some can be other players but all n all, good picks.
