Now that EA Sports has come out with NFL Head Coach as a video game, it's time for the next logical step and take the concept to the diamond. Thus, I give you MLB Manager 2007.
(Now, some of you might point out that EA Sports no longer holds the license to MLB video games. And you would be correct. Thus we have NCAA Baseball 2007. But that doesn't mean that either someone else does this or that EA Sports make an "unlicensed version". Either way this is something that needs to be done.
Now, think of all the possible scenarios that can go on within the game. Sure you can have your basic strategy, like when to hit and run, when to bring in the closer, whether Mattingly needs to get rid of his sideburns. But by having the game focus solely on the strategy and the "behind the scenes" action, there are whole new worlds that can be explored.
Just a few examples:
Your player just adopted a baby. You can either: send a fruit basket, ignore the situation, don't give him any time off, or throw a baby shower, or give him a month off.
Your player has been accused of using steriods. You can defend the player, ignore the situation completely, issue standard boilerplate about the judicial process, etc.
A call went against you in a game You can choose a whole bunch of reactions, from the Joe Torre "I Just Woke up from My Nap Approach", to a Lou Pinnella "base tossing" to Alfredo Griffin's "hat toss", to Joe Milikuk's "All of the Above".
That's just the tip of the iceberg. There's also the possiblities of press conferences, where you can choose your slurs against annoying local reporters. Or you can choose to go on talk radio and have your own show.
There's even the possiblity of a Commish mode. You can lock out the players, rearrange the divisions, create new schedules, suspend players, massively expand the league and then threaten contraction if cities don't spring for new stadiums, and ultimately lead your sport to glory. Oh, and you can choose your own hairpiece.
There's also Owner Mode. Negotiate tv contracts, rise ticket prices, charge $10 for parking all while saying that player salaries are too high.
There are all sorts of potential here. It's just up to someone to make it happen.
