MLB Coaches to Wear Helmets in Wake of Mike Coolbaugh Tragedy

The MLB owners meeting issued a release yesterday that base coaches will be required to wear protective head gear in the wake of the line drive accident that killed Tulsa Drillers third base coach Mike Coolbaugh in July.

I wrote a piece back in July called "The Height of Cool" where I called for protective gear for the players. Branch Rickey, the president of the Pacific Coast League, wrote in our VIP Room at MAJOR BLOGS that it was being resisted and probably wouldn't happen because no one had the proper gear.

I said to him: "And Mizuno or Wilson or one of the other vendors wouldn't jump at the chance to build a proper helmet for a base coach if MLB sanctioned it?"

Now there is a reason to develop proper gear to protect the coaches. It would have been nice, along with the announcement, if the MLB owners had announced that they were making a generous contribution to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund. Mike left behind two children and a pregnant wife. He now has three kids, and, because he was a minor league player, he doesn't draw a pension from the game that he played for 12 years.

The Tulsa Drillers and a local bank established the fund.

Donations are still being accepted to benefit the Coolbaugh family through the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund. Donations can be sent to SpiritBank at the address below. Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund c/o SpiritBank 1800 S. Baltimore Ave. Tulsa, OK 74119

I'm sure Tom Gamboa wished he was wearing a helmet while coaching third base at the Cell a few seasons back. kcfanattack020920.jpg

They're gonna look ridiculous, but at least they won't be killed.

That is the same thing that fans said when the helmets were introduced for players. Now they're so second nature no one even thinks about it. The same will happen for the coaches' helmets.

Why is this not a matter of personal choice?

Lots of equipment matters are not personal choice. The batters don't get to choose either. Dumb rule, but it's not the first time someone had to wear equipment against their wishes.

True. But this is rather unique because it is an equipment rule for coaches and not athletes. This smells of a matter of liability insurance issues...

Agreed...But, as far as I know base coaches are the only coaches actually in the field of play. Kinda like how the Umps have to wear equipment I guess. You can always count on the insurance racket to overstep its boundries and throw out personal liberties.

So what happens if a base coach is drilled in the chest with a errant foul "line drive"?

Only one thing: bulletproff vests.

Why isn't this optional? It's a minimal safety thing. It doesn't look really macho right now, but then again the player helmets had the same ding. Ok, no es muy macho, but Mike left behind a wife two kids and a baby on the way. Over the years we've had coaches with cracked ribs, bruised sternums, and a variety of other injuries. Sometimes it is very hard to get out of harm's way when you're focused on the guy at second and the shot comes up the foul line at 90-120mph. I'm sure that if Mike had time to react he'd be alive right now.

Another thing that MLB should do is be more strict when it comes to where the base coaches stand. They often wander down the lines.

Agreed. I'm getting sick of base coaches practically lingering in the field of play to block an outfielders view or to try and confuse an outfielder as to who the actual runner is. Now that they're wearing helmets as well as the runner, it will take more than a quick look to determine who is a base coach and who you're trying to throw out at home.

Prence - that is an excellent point.

So who will be the first outfielder to screw up?

Now that would make a classic YouTube video!

Tyrone, good point about getting drilled in the chest...that is another risk not to mention jagged edges of bats flying toward a coach.

Bats are low speed and easy to duck because you hear them going long before they get to you. Several base coaches have had badly bruised sternums from getting whacked in the chest. When someone drops dead from it, there will be some sort of pad I'm sure. If you recall, umpires originally didn't wear any kind of protection, then had those minimal pads until one of them went into heart failure after getting drilled by a wild pitch. That's when the fat pads came into play.

Coolbaugh was killed by a batted ball that hit him in the neck and ruptured an artery. A helmet would NOT have made a difference in his case.
