MLB All Underrated Team

by FreeClarett

These guys didn’t make the All-Star team, but they should have.

C- John Buck, Royals- Has the second most homeruns for a catcher, despite sharing time with Jason LaRue.

1B- Carlos Pena, Devil Rays- He has 20 homeruns in only 230 at bats. If he played for the Yankees, ESPN wouldn’t go more than 15 minutes without mentioning his name.

2B- Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox- .318 batting average, .400 OBP, .991 fielding percentage. He’s been one of the best second baseman in baseball, and (secretly) a key reason why the Red Sox are the best team in the league.

SS- Hanley Ramirez, Marlins- Has better numbers than Jose Reyes in every offensive category except for steals.

3B- Aramis Ramirez, Cubs- With a .312 batting average, 15 homeruns, and 51 RBI, he’s having one of the best years of his career.

OF- Chris Duncan, Cardinals- Having a better year than Grady Sizemore in every category except for steals.

OF- Curtis Granderson, Tigers- Double digits in every category except for steals.

OF- Brad Hawpe, Rockies- His numbers (.310, 15, 60, .394 OBP) are very similar to MVP candidate teammate Matt Holliday (.341, 15, 69, 392).

SP- Tom Gorzelanny, Pirates- See below.

SP- Ian Snell, Pirates- Both Gorzelanny and Snell have an ERA under 3.10 and both are in the top 15 in that category. The two have combined for 40 % of the Pirate’s wins in the first half.

SP- John Maine, Mets- Fifth in the majors in ERA. The four ahead of him are Chris Young, Jake Peavy, Dan Haren, and Brad Penny.

SP- Jeremy Guthrie, Orioles- One of the few reasons to watch an O’s game.

RP- Jason Isringhausen, Cardinals- The only closer with a lower ERA is J.J. Putz.

RP- Kevin Gregg, Marlins- He’s been lights out since becoming a closer. One of the biggest surprises in baseball.

RP- Scot Shields, Angels- Only allowed 9 runs in 42 2/3 innings.

RP- Rafael Betancourt, Indians- Only allowed 5 runs in 39 2/3 innings.

RP- Ryan Franklin, Cardinals- 1.23 ERA and .82 WHIP one year after having a 4.54 ERA and 1.4 WHIP last season.

Bench: Kevin Youkilis, Brandon Phillips, Jimmy Rollins, Chipper Jones, Xavier Nady, Matt Diaz, Reggie Willits

John Buck should have been on the AS team over Posada or VMart? He's having a nice year, but that's a stretch. Ditto for guys like Pedroia, Aramis Ramirez, Chris Duncan, etc. Nice players, but let's not get carried away.

Buck should have been the Royals rep, and Ramirez is having a better year thab David Wright is. I know all these guys shouldn't have made the team over some of the other players who made it, but I had to fill the roster with the best guys who didn't make the All-Star team.

Fair enough... in that case nice choices... I especially like the Hanley Ramirez and Curtis Granderson choices... IMO Ramirez has been the NL MVP of the first half... it's a crime he was left off the roster.

Good picks. I agree with most of them. Just some others I'd like to add:

Todd Helton (8 HR, 49 RBIs, .313 BA, .444 OBP, .473 SLG, 94 H) Alex Rios (even though he was an all-star, he was underrated in the voting, and he was the underdog in the HRD and proved everyone wrong. .520 SLG) Luis Gonzalez (Yes, of the LA Dodgers; .294 BA, 10 HR, 86 RBIs, the soon to be 40 year old this year can still play ball) Eric Byrnes (I think I've heard about him in the kayak a couple days ago than any other day; he has great defense and 14 HR, 49 RBIs, .306 BA, 110 Hits)

...That's all I got so far.

I love overrated/underrated talk. Pedroia's my boy, he could have been an All-Star, and he's still just a rookie. I have a hard time calling Jason Isringhausen underrated, just because of what he's done in the past. Eric Byrnes should be on here; although he did get to go to the All Star game with his dog Bruin in McCovey cove. Other than that, a very good list.

As good as Ryan Franklin is this year...I don't like him on the list for 2 reasons...

He's a reliever...they always have ups and downs...he'll come back down

He's been suspended for 50 games before...i forget why ; - )

I am not sold on Carlos Pena. I want to see him go through a whole season first. I had to watch him for a few years in Detroit. He always had power, but could never bring his average above the .240-.250 range. He's very streaky so I have a sense he may fall off a bit in the 2nd half. I agree with you about Pedroia. He should have been the all-star 2nd baseman over Polanco.

Brad Hawpe should've made the ASG if he is getting similar numbers to an MVP candidate. Good article.
