MIchigan loses in the Big House to Div-IAA App State, 34-32

I love it when the all-mighty preseason polls take a hit on the first week of the year and thankfully, U of M does not disappoint me in this fashion this year as they lose to a very tough but beatable Appalachian State, 34-32. In classic underachiever fashion, Michigan let their opponents get a big lead, fight back to lead late in the game then let victory slip through their fingers. As decidedly biased MSU fan, this loss pleases me to no end; almost more than seeing the Spartans take it to Division I-A UAB. But even objectively, this loss may haunt the Wolverines through out the whole year.

First, this week again supports my argument that the pre-season poll should be eliminated. How can you rank anyone when you have not played any games?

Michigan not only embarassed themselves, they embarassed the Big 10.

In the next poll, Michigan better not be in the top 25 at all.

I dunno. Doesn't the fact that U of M was ranked so high make the game a bit more exciting? Accurate or not... I like them.

I completely agree Christof. The preseason rankings are a flawed system, and should be eliminated. Because of them, Michigan can still be ranked next week, and possibly get back into the top 5 if they win out.

I don't agree Danf. We don't need polls to tell us which teams are going to be exciting. Most fans are intelligent and informed enough to realize which teams are going to be competitive on the National level. This Michigan loss is shocking any way you look at it. They don't need to be ranked for this to be classified as an upset of epic proportions.

I'm surprised, yes. Stunned... not really. App State did win the Div-AA championship last year... Perfect setup for an upset.

They shouldn't be totally booted out of the rankings but they should fall to #25. Carr has never been the master motivator but to not even get his team up for a Division I-AA school is inexcusable. He might be a goner after this year.

They're out until the beat someone of substance. It's like starting from scratch. Pre-season rankings are usually a crock in college team sports for week one anyway.

Michigan just decided to get their "big loss" over with really early this season.

Michigan's showdowns with Ohio State and Wisconsin have definitely lost some of their appeal.

What is amazing - and messed up - is that UM could win all of the remaining games, win the Big Ten and be in contention -BUT- if they would win ALL games up to the last 3 games and lose to Ohio State or a USC and they are knocked out for good

What if Michigan goes undefeated the rest of the year and wins the BCS title game, but Appalachian State ALSO goes undefeated and wins its Championship Game? Would App State be the REAL national champion?

In my opinion .... absolutley. Ever been to Boone? Yeah, it's not much to do, and now there's more to do. Drink Up Appy State Faithful!

Michigan won't win the BCS National Championship Game because they won't get there no matter what happens. Even if there are a slew of one loss teams at the end of the day, Michigan's loss won't stack with any of the other teams.

Mich. should have seen this coming, your talking about a very good team thats dominating the second tier, national champs last two years.... but apparently they overlooked that a team with passion can do, no matter the level of play. I was in N.C. last week and seen the signs and the love for their football team... they had what it took a want to win. Congrats to the App. State Mountaineers.

It's the Bush Administration's fault. Hurricane Katrina and Iraq has taken many of the elite tier of athletes out of scholarship consideration due to service duties and bueacracies. When they return , it is only to schools which are basically 13th grade.
