Low Attendance for Mexican Baseball

8

by user Niteowl049

The other day I watched just a little of a Mexican baseball game. The thing that caught my attention was the hundreds and hundreds of empty seats at the game. Am wondering how they can keep baseball alive in Mexico with such low attendance. While I was watching noticed Felix Jose and Karim Garcia former major leaguers were in the game.

For comparison sake our local Alexandria Aces independent team was 186th in minors and independent baseball with 79.071 attendance in 2006. In the Mexican League the Campeche Pirates were ranked 218th in attendance with a total of 52.470.

If anyone reading this article knows why Mexican League Baseball is drawing so few fans would like to know the reason for the decline of baseball in Mexico.

Most people can't afford tickets.

They play year round so its not as big a deal as it would be if there was a four month break between seasons.

Quality of play sucks. The reason there is "ex" major leaguers there is they are no longer good enough to play in the states, major OR minor league.

Crime rate. Mexico is the worlds largest landfill. Everything there stinks.

Didn't Garcia once play for the Yankees? Then you are correct, this league must stink. But pretty soon, it will be rejuvenated by another ex-Yankee who just happens to be 1-3 right now.

C'mon Tyrone, its OK to dis on the Yankees all day long, but at least have some substance to what you're saying. The only way Clemens would ever go to Mexico was to close a deal to buy the whole effin' country.

You think that would be enough for Sir Clemens? :)

Karim Garcia has gone from getting into postseason fights with the Red Sox to playing in the Mexican League, wow. At least he's not playing for the Royals though, that would be worse.

Garcia played for both the Yankees and Mets. Hasn't been in majors since 2004. Was nothing more than a journeyman player who hit 66 homers and hit .241 in ten seasons.

Garcia was in spring training this year with Philadelphia..was the last cut. Philly offered him a Triple A spot which Garcia refused. I know he won a batting title while in Triple A so he has a good stick, but is what is commonly known as a "tweener." A good Triple A player but not ML caliber.

Kelsdad...thanks for the explanation of why the Mexican League has such low attendance. Guess they are more into soccer.

Those same reasons seem to be contradictory when looking at soccer's popularity in Mexico.

Majors are full of "tweeners" who are too good for Triple A but not good enough for majors. Think teams only sign them to keep payrolls down.

Over expansion has alot to do with that as well. I think there are too many teams. Last expansion was 10 years ago and the talent level hasn't caught up with the league yet. Every team now has guys making a couple million a season and 15 years ago they would never have spent a day in the show.

I've been fortunate enough to see winter league games in Puerto Rico. Its an off-season endeavor for the natives and a place to play for some ML players who dont want to go to Mexico or Venezuela during the off season. Its a little over the top for me, what with salsa bands in the stands during the game, but the caliber of play is really good and the fans are awesome.

The park in San Juan is relatively close to where the main Bacardi rum distillery is, the vendors sell rum and cokes in 12 ounce cups for a $2. Can't beat that.
