Lost in Translation - MLBaseball Rulebook section 2.00 (definitions)

by user Manny Stiles

Is there really anything funnier than the English language???

I have a hobby where I take literary pieces, famous quotes and written terms and I translate them to other languages, then take that translation and translate it back into English just to see what happens (check out www.manykinds.blogspot.com for more wonderful non-sports examples)

Today I will take section 2.00 Definitions of the MLB rulebook, translate it into German this time, then taking that translation and directly translating it back to English...thus 'batter' ends up as 'egg paste' and 'catch' ends up 'bolting device'

- while I would never suggest to anyone to read this entire piece ...enjoy

to reference the ACTUAL rules written in English - http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/official_info/official_rules/definition_terms_2.jsp

I think German is a stranger language, there are about 8 words for "the" depending on whether the word is masculine, feminine, neuter, or whether it is in the nominative, dative, accusative, or genetive case. There was a table of 64 possible adjective endings depending on the case or gender of the word. I like sticking to "s" for plural and just using "the". (I just guessed "der" for the and either "e" or "s" for an adjective - they were the most frequent. I also remember there being ten ways to make a word plural, with absolutely no pattern. Crazy to learn...
