Los Angeles is much better than New York City

by user The Beast

Yep, I said it. We all know its true. Los Angeles is a better city and has a better sports atmosphere than New York City.

Los Angeles features sports on all levels, while New York does not. In LA we don't just have overpaid professionals running around, but college athletes too. USC and UCLA both have the most national titles of any other Division 1-A school. UCLA has 99 and USC is up in the early 90's. Besides the big two, LA has many other smaller universities. Pepperdine, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton (who won the College World Series), Loyal Marymount, etc. New York doesn't feature college athletics. Or at least Division 1-A. Do you ever see NYU putting up a basketball team. In LA we have a hotbed for future stars, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Paul Pierce, Tyson Chandler, Jeff Suppan, Mark Loretta, Freddy Sanchez, Tiger Woods etc. In LA, you can go to high school games and watch many future college and pro stars compete from football to baseball to golf.

Besides the fact, that LA owns New York in college and high school sports, LA also features better pro teams. The Lakers and Dodgers are two of the most successful professional sports franchises of all-time with 20 combined world championships. The Angels and Clippers are two up and coming teams. The Raiders and Rams both left, LA, but they have both won a combined 7 league championships. When do the Knicks win anything?

I know you can throw out the fact that the Yankees have 26 world championships. But look how many they won prior to 1960. The answer is 8? 18 came before the Angels even existed.

So it is clear that LA really dominated New York when it comes to high school, college, and pro. So when does LA really prove its superiority.

The Fans! Yup, LA fans are the best in the world. I know we get a lot of crap about coming late and leaving early, but maybe that has to do with the fact that we are busy. This isn't Utah or Ohio were the isn't much else to do on a Saturday. So even if many do come late and leave early that doesn't dtermine the quality of a fan.

In LA, we don't boo. How many times at the NFL Draft do we find the fans booing a selection. This is a twenty year old kid walking on stage, living his dream and the fans boo the pick. Really Classy, huh. LA fans typically don't boo and are very low key. They usually don't whine about picks, write blogs, etc. Most of us just hope for the best and for the team to play hard. Most of all, do you wonder why we don't have an NFL team here. It is because most ANgelones don't wish to pay for a stadium. We have told the NFL not to build one with our money. Go do it yourself. We will not bend over backwards for the NFL. We do have USC. USC or the Texans? Take your pick.

So I guess, LA is just a better sports town. While we may be equal ito New YOrk in terms of professional sports, we clearly have better college and high sports, plus an overall better fan base.

Whats your take?

I've always thought booing your OWN team is akin to calling your girlfriend ugly

(but I grew up in Bootown - Philly, a.k.a. "You SUCK!" City)

It's YOUR team! Booing should be reserved for the enemy!

Booing is the right of only the home teams' fans. By that i mean you have the right to slight your own team and mock them and get mad at them when they are bad. With that comes the responsibility of defending them because only you are allowed to rip them...

and that's where I never agreed with DIEHARD Philly fans (and probably why I never became one). It's not beneficial. And each year, more and more casual and less knowledgable fans join in on the mass psychology of it and become DIEHARD fans. Few DIEHARD fans are sports knowledgable. They are OCD psychos, not fans of sport. (not everyone, just most).

I am cool with loving mediocre players that get dirty and bleed on their unis, that's where Philly is great, but don't boo the great players who give your city an identity when they are human for a time. They booed Mike Schmidt, they booed Dr J. That's wrong

Don't get me wrong, I can boo my ass off (ask Kobe Bryant), but I've never booed MY team (Suns), I've never booed MY wife (except jokingly) and I'll never boo MY kids. Hell, booing the things you call your own is booing yourself.

Your decision manny. Booing Mike Schmidt was a different beast but I know quite a few Phils fans that still never accepted him. My father will always carry to the grave that Schmidt said the fans owed him (I'm not sure where he ever read this or heard this) but appearently Mike Schmidt said this and since than my dad refuses to acknowledge how great he was. Regardless, I respectfully disagree manny...

Many Stiles - Your dumb also over the fact that NY is Full of Angry People. We in NY just love Sports. Is there a problem with that ? NY is more lively at Night with thousands of Night Clubs, Immigrants from all over the World, Many High Classed people who love to Go to Theater plays, Comedy shows, Sport Games, Shopping, Sightseeing, Hotels and etc.. That's why you always see people filling up all the Streets Shopping and Eating and Having fun. Also to the Fact that we are one of the Safest big cities in the World. We are equal when it comes to Fashion and immigrants. LA does have a Good Fan Base Just cant compare it to NY's. Thats all.

You nailed the title, but then it went south afterwards.

New Yorkers HAVE to be great sports fans, they need an escape from the madness and bustle and a reason to feel good in the crappy weather. They are more passionate about sports because it's their identity.

L.A. has sun, weather, beaches, mountains, endless outdoor activites; Hollywood, celebrities, opulence, extravagance, elegance, titties. It's because of this people have better things to do than go to games and base their existance on a team.

New Yorkers are angry and on edge, SoCal is laid back and relaxed.

If you are a booer, why would age matter?

I remember once there was a Phillies game that was preceded by a Player's kids' T-ball game. Darren Daulton was on a horrible streak at the time (like 3-50 or something) and when they announced his 5 year old daughter for the game's lineup, she was BOOED viciously. Keep in mind, this was BEFORE the actual game and people were just filtering in!

People bring up the Philly Booed Santa thing all the time, Santa had it coming to him, but a 5 year old girl doesn't deserve that... It's no one's fault who their parent is.

Yes they do have to boo 20 year old kids thats part of the game. It shows passion and a love for their teams. Look at the Knicks have had a terrible run over the past few years, yet fans still flock to the Garden to watch them. Look at the Clippers, even when they had a great run last year they were not the toast of the town nor did they bring in loads of fans. LA fans are too consumed with the sun and beach and all that other stuff.

I have to dispute the college sports angle a bit. First New York does have D-I schools, the most obvious of which is Columbia, an Ivy League school (Also, NYU did, a long time ago, actually have a top-level basketball team). LA is inherently advantaged in this category. NY is a small dense city while Los Angeles is far more spread out. As a result, no college in New York is very large (in student body or area for facilities), so to ask an Columbia to compete with USC is bogus. The closest school that would make for a decent comparison is Rutgers (major conference, big student body) but that would be wrong as it is a New Jersey school.

To get accepted into USC you need a pulse and an ability to fund the tuition, I think it might be a little harder to get into Columbia, but I may be wrong... =)_

Utah and Ohio? What are you talking about?

I would argue the best fans come from the areas where it is hardest to be a knowledgeable fan. Those fans have to work to follow their team, they have to work to find trades, and uncover stories about what is going on in the doldrums of the team hierarchy. Many displaced fans that retain their loyalties are fantastic fans, they can't receive day to day coverage of their team throug the normal outlets. It is actually the easiest to be a fan in New York and LA, among a couple other cities.

And on a more general comment, this is a very poorly crafted argument and is certainly not the way to go about convincing people of your point of few.

Good effort for a tricky subject. Yankees > Dodgers by far and the dodgers are originally from NY. You got them on basketball, but LA has no football so its a forfeit win (and makes LA worse...no football?!). Finally Hockey, NY has the Islanders w/ multiple championships and the Rangers, an original 6 team...LA has the kIngs who had the wayner once...You've got NY on the college argument and I think its unfair for people to claim its hard for NY to compete because of the density...LA is a better college sports town, that's fair... still...sports overall, its NY hands down...

Out of all of these lousy comments, Manny made the most sense. NY is high-energy and usually fair weather. LA is low-energy and usually great weather.

People in LA tend to do more individual outdoor activities than in NY. People in NY are more down to earth and passionate about things and naturally cling to sports and their teams.

People in LA LA Land tend to be more FAKE and do not want to identify with anything such as sports. Many are transients trying to make it in LA. The fans of NY teams DO NOT COME FROM MANHATTAN. THEY COME FROM NJ, CT, and the BOUROUGHS. DON"T KID YOURSELF. NY teams have a very loyal following something LA will never have.

If you want a passionate sports city, go to Minnesota, Chicago, Texas, New York, Philly, Milwaukee, Detroit, or Seattle. LA comes nowhere close. At Lakers games, fans look genuinely bored and disinterested. Fans approach the game too causal at Angels and Dodgers games. The Mighty Ducks are the best team in hockey yet fans have no clue what goes on. As for NY sports fans, I live in the area and they are very overrated. They will care if the team does well and then ignore the team, when they stink.

los angeles? as in county? or the city?

as a county, you cant compare that to a city. unless your saying la county is better than...new york county? we dont have those sadly.

Now los angeles the CITY.. FAILS in comparison. Nyc is a media capital, fashion capital, entertainment capital, food capital and sports capital....La..has what? a few good basketball teams and cheap celebrities?

l.a people like the outdoorsy feel of their so called "city". But hello THATS NOT WHAT A CITY is about. a city is about hustle and bustle and big sky scrapers and such. And you dont need a car to get around in new york.

its better in every way, new york. And even if you wanted to get out of the city, theres huge parks and beaches to. NYC is more convenient and better at everything L.A tries to be.

la has a wierd inferioirity complex against new york and i dont blame the people for it.. if i was the second largest city in america i would to.

Plus the people in new york are more genuine and in your face. if they dont like you theyw ill tell you to your face.

Also, we have the largest and OLDEST educational system in america. go on wikipedia. new york is home to the best of the best private schools, vocational, sports, science schools because after all....it is new york. Home to the arts, sciences, and such.

we also have the united nations, comedy central, time warner, new york times, hbo, etc.

L.a its great weather but, when you need a car to get 40 miles to someplace..that sucks. the people are fake and its not even a real city.

Also NYC area there are many High Schools with Sports teams that are part of a P.S.A.L. which is like a High School Sports League. And in Major League Sports, There No Comparison i meen

We are home to the best major sports team in the World. YANKEES. All you baseball fanatics are stuck with those wack Angels and Dodgers who in today's days are wack as hell.

You guys have to get into a 2 hour traffic to get to a Game. I mean what the hell ?
