The Boston Red Sox completed a rain-shortened three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim today, riding another strong performance from Josh Beckett (W, 3-0) and a monster first inning at the plate to a 7-2 win in the annual Patriot's Day game at Fenway Park. Ervin Santana (L, 1-2), staked to a one-run lead after Orlando Cabrera's home run into the Monster seats in the first inning, gave up 5 runs in the first inning before even recording an out.
There was a scary moment for Angels fans in the top of the first as Beckett hit slugger Vladimir Guerrero with a fastball in the wrist. Guerrero immediately left the game, but precautionary X-rays were negative. Young second baseman Howie Kendrick had an up-and-down day for LA, making a costly throwing error on a double play ball in the 1st, getting thrown out by Wily Mo Pena trying to stretch a single into a double, but hitting his second home run of the year, a solo shot in the 9th off of Kyle Snyder.
Boston's offense has absolutely rolled in the past few games, and today was no exception. David Ortiz hit his fourth home run of the year, and Ortiz, Julio Lugo, Mike Lowell, and Alex Cora all had doubles in the game. Beckett pitched well yet again, going 6 strong and striking out 6 while walking only one. The only run he allowed was on Cabrera's homer in the first, Beckett's first long ball given up this year. He led the AL in that category in 2006 with 36 homers given up in 33 starts.
Coming Up Next... The Sox leave Boston and head up north to face the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays for three games at the Rogers Centre. Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-1, 2.57) will start the opener against young lefty Gustavo Chacin (1-0, 4.91).
The Angels try to reverse their fortunes and end their four-game losing streak when they take on their division rival, the Oakland A's in Oakland. Jered Weaver (NR) will make his first start of the year (which was supposed to be today instead of Santana) in the two-game series, against Oakland's Chad Gaudin (0-0, 2.53).
