Last night the Boston Red Sox offense came alive again, this time in support of elder statesman Tim Wakefield (W, 1-1) as they defeated John Lackey (L, 2-1) and the visiting Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Red Sox battery was the show, as Wakefield pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball, allowing only 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2, while personal catcher Doug Mirabelli went deep for the first time this season, a solo shot off of Lackey in the fifth which began the onslaught. Lackey pitched quite well in the losing effort, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 ER and striking out 6 while walking only one. To say that that was by and far Lackey's worst outing of the young season should say something about how well he's been pitching so far this month. Every Angels pitcher gave up at least one run, while the Red Sox got 2 scoreless innings from Brendan Donnelly, Jonathan Papelbon, and Mike Timlin out of the bullpen in support of Wakefield.
Vladimir Guerrero continued his hot start, knocking in his 12th run of the year in the fourth to represent the entirety of the Los Angeles offense on this day. Orlando Cabrera scored that run, after having walked and stolen a base. Catcher Mike Napoli and second baseman Howie Kendrick added doubles to the cause.
In addition to Mirabelli's two, the Red Sox got three RBI's each from Mike Lowell, David Ortiz, and J.D. Drew, who has been the team's best hitter so far. Mirabelli's two hits were his first two of the year. Oft-maligned center fielder Coco Crisp continued his frigid start at the plate, going 0-5, striking out twice and leaving 6 men on base -- he is hitting only .121 so far. Shortstop and leadoff hitter Julio Lugo is finally starting to show some signs of life, going 3-5 at the top of the order and scoring two runs.
Coming Up Next... The two teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, as Hector Carrasco (0-0, 1.80) heads to the mound for the Angels, replacing Kelvim Escobar, who has been placed on the 15-day DL with shoulder issues. Carrasco will face the Boston ace, Curt Schilling (1-1, 4.91).
