Looking Back, Looking Forward: Yankees 2006 Regular Season

I am a traveler of both time and space/To be where I have been. –Led Zeppelin, Kashmir

Back when I burst onto the ACGM opinion scene, I wrote a rather unflattering review of the New York Yankees' first six games. Starting out 1-5 is definitely no picnic in Central Park, but I said it then and I'll do the same here and now: It's a sprint, not a marathon. (sic)

Actually, what I meant to say was, "It's not a sprint, it's a marathon." Boy, did I mung that one up!

Between my gaffe and this column, between Alex Rodriguez' slumps and Randy Johnson's bad pitching performances, between the injuries to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui and all the trade deadline wheeling and dealing to get guys like Bobby Abreu and Craig Wilson, the Yankees regular season seemed like the Boston Marathon, with a few extra miles added on. After sweeping the Sox in mid-August, the finish line finally came into view, and the AL East seemed so close we could almost taste it.

The Yankees were almosted destined for third place, where they haven't been in what seems like ages, when Matsui injured himself in May against the Boston Red Sox. But, in spite of A-Rod's errors and the occasional Mariano Rivera blowup, the Yankees are in the postseason for the twelfth year in a row, which seemed near-impossible back on the second weekend of April. But, I and other Pinstripe supporters held hard when we really wanted to yell, "MAN THE LIFEBOATS! WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND RED SOX FANS FIRST!"

What I'm trying to say is the 2006 regular season was a personal odyssey as a Yankees fan. This website, where I have been able to document and share my views on the team with other sports fans, aided me in the adventure.

The results of the last six games of the '06 season may not matter, but let's hope we get a better break in the postseason this year! Yankees Universe, all together now...

LET'S GO YANKEES! (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap) (repeated ad infinitum and ad nauseum, to bug all the Red Sox fans who'll start watching us on TV in a few days)

Here's another story line: any team that spends 1/5th of a billion dollars on payroll in a given year in a league without a salary cap should have a pretty good shot at making the playoffs, regardless of an injury here, a slump there.

I think Melky got screwed this year. If I was him I would be pissed.
