Murrieta Valley High School Senior, Rickie Fowler, won the CIF Southern California High School golf title, again. Last year, when he won "State", he broke the California High School Records once held by Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. This year he decided not to defend his state title in Pebble Beach, opting, instead, to play the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in early June of 2007. He won the event, making it the biggest tournament Fowler had won up to that point, whose four-day score of 8-under-par 272 earned him a 1-stroke victory on the par-70 course.
His recent victory at the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions in Johnstown, Pennsylvania places Fowler in the company of two-time Masters winner Ben Crenshaw, PGA Tour Players Brad Faxon, Lucas Glover, Scott Verplank and Billy Andrade, and former PGA regular Bobby Clampett, all of whom have won the tournament in the past.
Six days earlier Fowler failed to earn a spot in the U.S. Open, but after fighting off the disappointment, created a different scene for himself in Pennsylvania.
When he was younger, ten and twelve years of age, I played against him at a small tourney sponsored by my employer. He is a local talent, and his father is friends and the neighbor of one of my bosses. Back then he was such a string-bean of a kid, with no visual evidence that he could drive the ball far at all. Well, he was out-driving everyone, and beat me easily. Amazing swing, amazing player, and amazing human being.
Tiger, watch out! Here comes Rickie Fowler!
